Kerwin Bell for Head Coach ?

Post

Kerwin Bell is known as the University of Florida Hall of Famer, who was the Gators' starting quarterback from 1984-87, winning the SEC Player of the Year in 1984. He turned that into a 13-year professional career. He has studied under at least 11 offensive coordinators including: Steve Spurrier, Lindy Infante, and Don Shula. After his long professional career, Kerwin took a job at a brand new high school called Trinity Catholic in Ocala, Fl. In 5 years, his football team went undefeated, winning a state championship. He then headed to Jacksonville for his next job, as some of you know, at Jacksonville University. This non-scholarship 1-AA program has had one winning record before Kerwin acquired the job in 2007. In just 2 years he won the conference championship, two more years, a 10-1 season with another championship and then another championship in 2014. His offense was in the top 5 every year while he was at Jacksonville University, not to mention, his defense who led the league in turnovers for 2 years and led country in ints them 2 years! After last year, Kerwin took the job at a DII power house in Valdosta State. This season they finished 8and2 and made the playoffs when they were projected to finish 5th in the conference! They were 1st in the conference in passing and 8th in the country! Also on defense they forced 27 ints which was 2nd in the nation and forced 34 turnovers which was 3rd in the nation! This man has won everywhere he has been and I think would be an interesting candidate for the recent opening for head coach. He knows how to build programs and has great ties recruiting Florida! Tell me what do you guys think about this potential hire?

Only issue I see was last two years at jville record was vacated due to rules violations, not sure what those were.... but if you have issues at a school like jville state, would think that could be bigger issues at a bigger program

I was recruited by Kerwin and played one year under him at JU his first season as coach. Even though it's a non-scholarship school they were very good at providing financial aid to basically the scholarship players. After my first semester there I received a check, and got paid to go there. I hated the school and left after the first semester then ended up at FAU just as a student.

Kerwin can definitely coach offense I can tell you that, but he is very full of himself. Players either loved him or they couldn't stand him.

I think he needs to get an OC job at the FBS job before he can make the jump to HC. Just my two cents

As far as the NCAA scandal at JU goes I heard it was the administration not equally distributing money only to athletes and not to other programs like art or music. When it was all over the past president got blamed for it and apparently Kerwin knew nothing about it

Jacksonville plays in the non scholarship Pioneer League. Their violations were within the league only and were punished internally. They violated no NCAA rules.

According to JU, Bell and his staff were let go because he he wanted scholarship football and they made him sound like a pest about it. He said he wanted it but never pushed the issue internally and JU made that up. Anyway, he wasn't happy with the JU administration when he left. He apparently wanted to continue building something there with or without scholarships. Sounds like JU really wants to stay small time. Was an interesting read.

Guys, I have heard from an inside source that Mario Cristobal, Jim Leavitt and Randy Shannon are the front runners for this job. I'd prefer Leavitt out of that group then Cristobal but please no Randy Shannon
