Re: KEYS TO TURNING THIS SEASON AROUND

Fitting to post this here…Coach made some interesting statements on the FAU Sportspage Radio Show tonight:

"As we look at it realistically, this football team has the capacity to win games in our conference. I don't think there's anybody in our conference who we can't match up with."

"I'll be chastised for making that statement, but who cares."

"I have Faith in these kids…They're all playing as hard as they can…The defense has really made some improvements."

"We are gonna be there for each of the games that we have left to play, and I think that we have a legitimate chance to win, and I think we will win."

"I'm not going any further than the first game we play a week and a half from right now."

"We can get the win over Arkansas State, and we'll come back for the next one, and the next one, and the next one."

"I've made the case for still being in the hunt for the conference championship, and I'm first to know that that's very optimistic to think that we can run the table and beat a great team like Troy and others."

"But we do have that history in our genes that we have done those types of things in past years, and these are the same types of kids that have been on some of those teams. They've seen the film of those teams and also believe that they can make it happen."

1) Confidence - This goes for both players and coaches. When the coaches demonstrate confidence in the players the players will gain confidence in themselves. Lots of people are pointing to Detroit and the "vote of no confidence" as having a significant negative impact on this team. Time to get the confidence back.

Confidence. Check. Based on what Coach had to say in the post by Rick.

I like to think that at least the majority of posters on this board are hardcore, lifelong fans who bleed FAU.

I think your right…. We're all dissappointed, but we are here…

If you dont stand by this program thru the bad times you have no right to celebrate the good times in my opinion.

Re: KEYS TO TURNING THIS SEASON AROUND

Well, I guess the complainers have a right to complain. That's the way of America, and I would strongly defend that right. But I wish they would look at the bright side: This is a fine program, it is a clean program and it is a program with a very bright future. Though I live 2,000 miles or so away, I have had FAU season tickets for all 10 years (a friend sees to it that they are used). I also have season tickets to Air Force (putting together a nice season) and Colorado (yikes!), as well as University of Denver hockey (NCAA Division 1, and looking strong again). But my first loyalty is to the Owls, of course, and Coach Schnellenberger. I cannot imagine any other coach anywhere who could have gotten the Owls to where they are in this short a time. For some reason, it seems to get harder to catch them on TV (here in the mountains) as the years pass. But I have been fortunate enough to follow them on satellite radio or the internet or, if attending another game, on my BlackBerry. It's worth the effort. Health willing, I'll be at this year's FIU game in Fort Lauderdale and next year's opener in the new stadium, and I'll be cheering on the Owls and the coach, win lose or draw. I remain optimistic: I think this team has a lot of talent waiting to jump to another level to show themselves (and us) plenty to support. I was graduated from FAU a long time ago (1969), and I know all too well how fortunate we are to even have a team, much less one that has achieved this much in a decade. End of sermonette.

The board has been awfully quiet this week. That is proven by the fact that the 2011 bonfire is getting the most attention on this board. Time to reflect a bit on the season and to what needs to be done in order to improve with 7 games left.

1) Confidence - This goes for both players and coaches. When the coaches demonstrate confidence in the players the players will gain confidence in themselves. Lots of people are pointing to Detroit and the "vote of no confidence" as having a significant negative impact on this team. Time to get the confidence back.

2) Discipline - FAU has historically lacked discipline. Too many penalties and too many mistakes (dropped balls, missed blocks, etc.). This team needs to gain some discipline in a hurry if they hope to be competitive.

3) O-Line - The play of the O-line needs to improve. This is a difficult one to fix since the line has little experience and is a patchwork of reserve players who are largely undersized. Even so, they are the starters and they need to get better. The right offensive calls would help to put them in a position to succeed as well. Keep blocking schemes basic so that the line can have some success and gain some confidence in themselves (see #1).

Can boil it down to those 3 IMO.  Coach Schnellenberger was starting to sound like himself again during the groundbreaking.  Maybe it will have the energizing effect needed.  We need the fiesty, "can do" Howard Schnellenberger of a few years ago back.

I think the rest of this season is more about 2011 but there's no reason that this year's lessons can't result in a comeback season next year.

Offense:  Catch the ball and block.

Defense:  Stop the run in between the tackles.

Special Teams:  I dont even know where to begin.
