Kiffin to FSU?

Post

With basketball starting,  I'm tho king Dusty will be the first coach to make the leap to the next step on the ladder. I don't know Lanes personal life.  But he has it pretty sweet. Nice paying job. Low pressure (in comparison). Nice home. Nice boat. Easy access to ocean. South Florida. Sounds like a dream job.

With FSU firing a name HC not even 2 years into the job, what sane HC would want THAT PRESSURE!!!!!

FSU was not that terrible (4-5), I am no slick Willie fan but that was insane and $18M to Taggert alone and another $2M to the staff to leave after the season PLUS whatever you have to pay to get a new HC.

I will say my feelings are Willie got a raw deal BUT STILL WON THE LOTTERY!!!!!

There are about 4.5 to 6 million reasons why a coach would want that pressure.

FSU is still only 6 years removed from a title and finished in the top 5 from 1987 to 2000.

I do think Lane is happy here but let's not kid ourselves into thinking we would not want a job like FSU.

FAU is great and has potential, but its probably wearing to only see 12k in the seats for a big conference matchup.
You also have to think all the younger assistants with Lane would love for him to jump at that job and take them with them, so they can earn 2x3 times as much and have many more resources.

I was at the FSU vs Syracuse game, so very little excitement around that.  But there were still probably 50k fans in attendance.  I have only been to 3 games at FAU this season, but even the UCF game wasn’t totally full (I know the announced attendance was a record, but I still saw plenty of seats available and it felt like about 1/2 or more of the crowd was UCF).

So like I said in my earlier post, a ton more money, the challenge of resurrecting what could be a sleeping giant, the relatively easy path to a major bowl game, being on TV every week, and Shane’s great point about more money for the assistants is the draw for whoever takes the job.

But poor or retiring leadership (I read the President of the boosters is also retiring soon) means you also don’t know who the big bosses might be. And as evident with the firing of Taggart there will be pressure to win.  But I think coaches at this level want that.  At a place like FSU you cannot have a record under .500, and the next guy will be expected to still get to 7 or more wins immediately and need to be at 9 or more by year 3.

It's starting to look like Stoops is the guy for FSU.

I don't believe Kiffin was ever in the discussion.  If we could win 8-9 this year AND win the conference next year I'll start to worry that someone big enough for him to want to go will give him an offer he can't refuse.  At this point he doesn't have the record for that kind of offer, just the notoriety.

GO OWLS!

I heard on sports radio, stoops,  $40 mil, didn't get the number of years. Briles  being retained and being groomed as the future successor. Just like jimbo  was with Bowden. He has a lot of fixin to do at Tallahassee.

4.5 million may not be enough for Kiffin. I get a sense he would want the school to buy in on him like FAU did.
Also while 7 million buyout from FAU may not seem like much its on top of the 19 million taggart buyout.

Lane's buy out from FAU is only 1 million I believe.

I’m starting to think Lane needs a 2017 UCF type season to get a P5 job at a name program. Could he get offered a job from a non elite P5 that could happen quicker. But I think we’re in great shape as far as keeping Lane. Also, if he leaves at some point I love the FAU administration that has already spent top dollar on a coach by CUSA standards but having by far the highest salary in the conference makes me think we will hit on another great hire

I don't think he's going to FSU but the coaching carousel is just getting started. Say for the sake of conversation that he were to get a great opportunity (I'd love for him to stay but understand that it's his career not mine and he has done a lot for us) who would you like to see FAU go for? An up and comer P5 coordinator type, a former coach who fell from grace and is in the analyst/tv/coordinator role? Just a few interesting names: Matt Canada, Major Applewhite, …. Jim Leavitt.
