Life after Howard....

I don't think a high school coach is the way to go. Success with a high school program does not equal success at a college program. Just ask Dodge and North Texas.

Even though I don't think FAU will name a head coach in waiting, I think Howard hopes to groom an assistant for the head coaching job. My feeling right now is that it is not necessarily a good idea. I think once Howard leaves FAU should bring in a fresh staff.

I think a guy who has experience and who has been in the spotlight and maybe has not had a great deal of success for whatever reason, such Willingham or even Al Groh for example would make a good fit. Someone who has been at high level programs and who knows how to continue to develop the FAU program. There will be plenty of guys out there. It has to be the right fit. FAU doesn't want to hire someone for 3-4 years who has some success and leaves for greener pastures.

GO OWLS!!!

The problem with bringing in a Willingham or an Al Groh where is the money coming from? These coaches were getting paid millions at their previous coaching jobs. Why would they want to come to an FAU to get a job when they either find a job at another non-BCS school and get paid more or they can just live off the money they have and not coach anymore.

High School coaches don't necessarily equal success in college but Todd Dodge isn't a good example lol. That team is a disaster, I don't think Urban Meyer could fix that team lol. The thing about a H.S. coach is even if he leaves in 3-4 years for greener pastures while he's here if he's from a top H.S. in the state he can recruit kids from his old school and that might make a big difference

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Re: Life after Howard....

I agree on the money issue. I was using Willingham and Groh as examples of the type of coach that FAU should consider, not saying that FAU should go after them specifically. FAU cannot match the $1million plus salaries of most BCS coaches. However, some BCS coaches do make less than $1million and FAU would be wise to look for an experienced BCS caliber coach to eventually replace Howard. The salary will have to increase. Howard is making $375,000 and I think in order to be competitive FAU will have to plan on spending in excess of $500,000 to get an experienced coach. It is not out of the realm of possibility, but it will no doubt be difficult given the budget situation.

Dodge coaches and recruits in the state of Texas and his team has sucked since he began, 2-10 this year. Enough said about Coach Dodge, back to drivers ed for him!

And his son was considered a top recruit. He isn't getting it done so I wouldn't expect a high school coach in Florida to be able to make the jump like Dodge did and be any more successful.
