Looking Ahead to UAB

This game should be a win for FAU. One concern is the UAB QB. Here are some numbers from UAB's game against Tulsa.

QB J. Webb rushed for 136 yards on 18 carries.

UAB had 245 yards rushing in the game.

Tulsa passed for 361 yards against UAB.

All of these numbers point the potential for a lot of offense this week and the need for the FAU defense to tighten things up before facing UAB.

The FAU rushing attack also needs to improve after averaging 1.6 per carry against Texas.

GO OWLS!!!

If UAB wins vs FAU, FAU nation should all jump off the ledge bc it would a pretty big up upset.  UAB really stinks, they are CUSA's FIU.  UAB game should be a cake walk for any Div I team.  I fully expect FAU to win; but it if they don't; you all should be really upset.

Re: Looking Ahead to UAB

I introduced myself on the other UAB thread, but I wanted to convey some info about this UAB team. When it was decided that Watson Brown would leave, a struggle ensued over who would be his successor. UAB is dominated by a Tuscaloosa campus dominated Board of Trustees who proceeded to block the rise of Pat Sullivan to HC. Maybe it was his Auburn background? Then they blocked even interviewing Jimbo Fisher of LSU. When "the smoke cleared", UAB had former Tide player and UGA assistant Neil Callahan as HC. The strong-arm way the change happened resulted in many promising players (including coveted recruits)  leaving the program and Callahan's stern rules ran some others off. Then the NCAA cut our recruiting numbers due to so many players leaving, many in poor academic standing (APR).

The result was that UAB started 2007 with 60 scholarship players plus 7 walk-ons added at the last moment. We, of course, got mauled. This year we are up to about 70 on scholarships, and most who play are freashmen or one letter players. Webb had to play WR many times last year because the only other QB could ONLY play QB while Webb was a very good WR and QB. This is his FIRST year to play only QB. We are heavy on JUCO players at skill positions, but we hope this will be only a temporary fix.

I think the Callaway staff is made up of very good (though some are very young) coaches. I don't think many UAB fans blame him for the way he was hired. We have put that behind us, if for no other reason than we can't do anything about it. UAB got its first new football conditioning / training facilities last winter, the first since the FB program began around 1990. Up to then, we had been taking "turns" working out on the basketball team's equipment at Bartow Arena. We are down but not out, and we may surprise a few teams this year, maybe FAU!! GO BLAZERS!!!

Wow, interesting stuff! Seriously. Sounds like UAB is going to be rebuilding for a little while. Nothing you can really do about that… everything in time.

Re: Looking Ahead to UAB

Will we be able to stop the run - that will a key to how this team does on Sat.

UAB - 245 rushing yards w/ 169 passing for  total of 414 yrds.
FAU on the other hand :35 rushing yards w/ 255 passing yards for a total of 292 yrds
Go to the football page & you can see a break down of stats comparing FAU & UAB. at: FAU Football

Another key: We need more then 35 yadrs rushing, we do better as an offense if we can get 125-150 yards on the ground (be great if we could get more).

It's a little misleading only using our stats from the Texas game, I know it's all the stats we have so far this year but misleading still…

On a side note what section is everyone sitting in? I have been on this board since 2004 and haven't met a single one of you fellow Owl fans… we need to get together for brewskys on Saturday…

Re: Looking Ahead to UAB

One of two things has to happen to get this game off on the right foot and avoid a hangover from the Texas loss.

1) If we are defense first we must get a stop on the first series.

2) If we are offense we must drive down they field and get the ball in the endzone to take the early lead.

If either of those two happen I think the teams confidence will soar and it will be difficult to stop us.

If we either let UAB score on the opening drive or we have a turnover or punt, it will make the game significantly more difficult.

We need to set the tempo early by getting out and smacking UAB in the mouth. We had a chance to go up early on Texas, but the turnover killed us. We cannot afford to let UAB in this game.

Re: Looking Ahead to UAB

I agree with Bytor and Boone. The run game should show a marked improvement against UAB. The stats from Texas are not a true reflection of what we can do on the ground.

If we get the run going it will help to open up the pass and Rusty could have a huge game. He had 192 in the first quarter against Texas will virtually no running game to speak of.
