Please.  What a lame excuse.  We are going to not name the mascot something because others schools may, one day, change the first letter and make it a degrogatory word?  First of all that would reflect badly on those fans, not FAU.  Second, other schools can make up bad things about just about any name.

Thats as stupid as somebody saying we dont recruit black athletes because we are scared people from other schools are going to call them names.  I cant believe this is even an issue.  They are going to call a big owl the N word?  It doesn't even make sense.

Exactly!  It's such a non-issue that it's ridiculous.  It's a giant owl…why would anyone in their right mind mock an Owl like that in the first place.  If someone is going to change the name Digger to the N word, I fail to see how that is FAU's problem.  Digger is a perfectly good name for a Burrowing Owl.  If they are afraid someone will use the mascot to somehow mock the school by using a degrading term, then don't have a mascot at all. 

Owl could be changed to bOwl. (to be read as bowel not bowl)

FAU stands for find another university… I guess we need to change our name too!  :

That's also silly.  Why do they need matching names?  Do all "mascot couples" have matching names??  What would they name it if the Owl was named Hootie?  Hooter's Girl?

They can name the female Owl anything they want.  Digger is the best name for the Owl.  Worry about the female Owl later. 

The whole thing is silly, really. The name of mascots only ever seems to come up in freshman orientations and trivia contests.

I was actually more worried about people associating our mascot with a certain other corporate cartoon by the name of Digger….
