My alma mater’s football frenzy

My alma mater’s football frenzy

Notre Dame, Michigan, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Rice, etc……all INCREDIBLE academic institutions, all with football programs.  The argument holds no water, Michigan is the winnigest football program in history and the #1 public university in the country according to most rankings.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

I essentially just said that if the Athletics Fees do not go toward football, they'll just go toward another one of our intercollegiate sports.

Furthermore, I argued that the funding sources for academics and football are separate and it's not like we've cut classes, closed libraries, fired professors or eliminated tutoring in order to fund football. We haven't even cancelled classes on "big game days."

So what is the argument there? Athletics and academics can coexist and obviously do so at many successful institutions (UF, Michigan, etc).

Athletics does so much more for a University then people realize.  It helps retain alumnis support to the University - Football gave me a chance to get back in touch with my Alma Mater.  It helps bring people together that would not necessarily have a reason to come back to campus after graduation.  Shows you just how important it is to get a stadium on campus & now with the new Alumni center, the pieces are slowly coming together.  The University is changing everyday, heck I remember when the Library was in the middle of nowhere.

There are many other benefits, and as we continue to put al the pieces together the benefits will be much more appearant.

Forgot to mention - it's only an opinion and I still think that both academic & athletics can co-exist and help the University flourish.

Re: My alma mater’s football frenzy

There's a reason the Ivy League exists….and I think they are doing fine academically. The argument against FAU having a football team is outdated and pretty dumb. To think this program is anything but a positive now and more importantly in the future is just plain ignorant. I know it will keep me and my friends who are alumnus connected to the University for hopefully decades to come.

Re: My alma mater’s football frenzy

I'll attach my report to this post when I complete it. My report is going to be on football and the affect it has on a university when added at the D-1A (FBS) level. It's for my graduate sports governance class and is due in December. It's also going to serve as the beginning of my Ph.D. studies, so hopefully it will be good! I'll attach it in a few weeks.
