Without a doubt, Nebraska will be an extremely tough and intimidating game for the Owls, but a win isn't that far-fetched.

Yes, Nebraska finished the 2008 season 9-4, ranked 28th overall and WAS the 17th highest scoring team in the nation.

But in 2009 Nebraska has to rebuild its offense: they lost a majority of their offensive line, both their starting and backup QBs, and their top-two receivers. Their running game is terrible!!! Their leading rusher finished 70th in the nation with just over 800yrds.

Nebraska also has a penalty problem (as does FAU). Nebraska had 94 penalties, the 15th most in the nation. FAU had 96 penalties, 13th most.

Granted…Nebraska regularly plays against a higher caliber of team (Big 12 conference), but defensively, they aren't a good team. Not a single defensive player on Nebraska ranks in the top-100, and give up just as many points per game as FAU's defense.

The toughest aspect of this game, will be the crowd. Their fans and that atmosphere is crazy! If FAU can ignore that stuff, and focus, they have a chance at winning.

Nebraska didn't have a terrible running game. We had a three man rotation of Marlon Lucky(Gone), Roy Helu(JR.), and Quentin Castille(JR.) and next year we'll have Marcus Mendoza, who looks promising. We have a good QB in Zac Lee, a RS Freshman in Kody Spano who looks good, and a true freshman that looks awesome and was the most hyped recruit of our '09 class in Cody Green.
Bo is improving our defense. Our defense will be anchored around DT ndamukong suh (highlights of him) He is one of the most athletic DTs in country and he's 300 pounds. Even though we lose 2 d-linemen(only steinkuhler started at the beggining of the year) Barry Turner will be back and we have great talent at d-li ne to replace steinkuhler. The only question mark for me is the secondary. Our defense held the 'Thunder and Lightning" of Clemson's rushing attack to under 50 yards combined. Also, what do you mean by not one of our defensive players ranks in the top 100? Suh would probably be in it. Also, we had the second or third best D in the Big 12.

I'm glad someone pointed that out… Our rushing attack was nowhere near terrible.. I'm sorry we didn't have one single back that took all of the carries… We were very balanced and as the OP said we were the 28th overall offense in the nation… We aren't Texas Tech….. Our defense may very well end up the best in the big 12.  We do lose Ganz n Swift which are big losses, but the loss of Witt is close to nothing.. A lot of people didn't even expect him to be the starter anyways.. Zac Lee is the better "athlete" out of him n Witt..  I really don't see how the OP can say we don't have a good defense playing in the Big 12… maybe you missed the memo about the offenses in the Big 12?  Not 1 player in the top 100 defensively?  Maybe you don't know who Suh is?  I mean, you throw out a bunch of numbers but we return a ton on defense, and really, I think that will be enough in this game.  Too early to make score predictions or anything like that, but I think that it stays close for the 1st 20 minutes or so and then NU pulls away…

Welcome to the board. Good input. I don't expect FAU to do much on the ground against Nebraska. FAU has never been a consistent running team with the exception of a few big games last year. However a questionable secondary could be exposed by Rusty and the FAU passing attack. If FAU can avoid turnovers and get touchdowns as opposed to fieldgoals when in the redzone this could be a closer game than some might think.

The Texas game turned out very bad, but Rusty put up big numbers in the first half and he turned the ball over in the redzone early in that game. After that momentum shifted and it was good night FAU. I don't anticipate the same happening at Nebraska.

GO OWLS!!!

I can't honestly see FAU being able to move the ball effectively on the ground OR through the air. Our defensive line was the anchor last year, behind Suh who has been mentioned, and should be close to the same if not better talent-wise (this is the defensive line that held Clemson's two future NFL runningbacks to 4 yards combined). You think that you'll get good yards through the air, but I'm not seeing that either. Our secondary last year gave up 357 yards to Texas Tech (actually one of Tech's lowest totals on the season, maybe they're lowest I would have to check that stat), 261 yards to Missouri, 315 yards to Oklahoma, and 304 yards to Kansas. 3 of the 4 quarterbacks on teams I just mentioned have been or should have been Heisman finalists (Graham Harrell), and one of them won it. Todd Reesing also was in the discussion in 2007. I'm sure no FAU fans would disagree that their talent level is far beyond that of your guys' players. In addition to that, our secondary was still learning the system throughout the season, and now has a year under their belt, along with much more depth.

Look the stats for FAU vs. Texas. FAU had over 100 yards through the air in the first quarter. Granted it dropped off dramatically after that, but FAU has the potential to move the ball through the air on just about anybody. I am not saying that Smith will have 300+ yards, but he will have a solid day. That is the one thing that I am very confident about. Most everything else is a question mark.

GO OWLS!!!

Must agree with Walty. At the time we didn't realize that Texas would basically compete for the national title. Nebraska is not anywhere near the level that Texas was last year. Comparing Colt to a unproven QB is silly.

Texas started 3 true freshman DBs last year. Your QB set the world on fire against 3 guys playing their first quarter of college football ever. Congrats! It didn't take those young kids too long to figure out your "complex" offense. We have veteran DBs so this year you will have a much more difficult time. FAU get stomped in front of the nation, again.
