New Conference Realignment Shenanigans

1) Two different media markets…and FIU has major competition in the Miami football market. We are the sole D1 team in the West Palm market.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_media_markets_and_college_football

2) FAU has a higher home average attendance than FIU.
http://blog.philsteele.com/2011/04/06/2010-homeaway-average-attendance/

3) Up to 2010: FAU All-time record: 57-63…..FIU All-time record: 31-74
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIU_Golden_Panthers_football

1) Media markets are categorized as Miami-Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce.
MFL- is the 16th biggest market in the nation. | WPB is 38th.

2) Phil Steele is counting last year's game in Detroit (which technically is "home attendance" but really we don't get 40,000 people at at game. Here is what the NCAA counted http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/d47a560045aad7aab88ffc9080650d5b/2010_Attendance.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&CACHEID=d47a560045aad7aab88ffc9080650d5b
FIU: 19,808
FAU: 14,025

3) no argument there, expect that FAU is in a decline and FIU is on the rise.

Re: New Conference Realignment Shenanigans

I would be happy with a move to CUSA. We would play against teams such as Houston, Tulsa, Southern Miss and Marshall which in my opinion are an upgrade to playing against the likes of WKU, ULM, Arkansas State and soon to be South Alabama.

Why would you not blame them?

Just to keep things real (I know we are emotional about our record right now), you really truly believe that the board of Conference USA has people going…"you know we have to pick a school and that 6-6 record in the SunBelt that FIU posted after going 0 for thier previous 34 games is just so damn impressive we have to take them".

I am not trying to debate just to debate, but somebody has to keep things in perspective on this board.

Agree with you here. Although FIU is the 'flavor of the month' I doubt realistically there is going to be much difference in the interest they receive from what we can receive. FIU is still a horrible draw as far as fan attendance and it's not like their facilities are top notch. And they do play in the shadow of UM (not that we don't but to a lesser degree being in PBC). I think our new stadium is really going to pay dividends but the product on the field will have to improve in a rather short period of time. And we really need a good hire for the HC position. I think conferences can look at our past success, and if the peices are in place, can see how bright the future can really be.

Re: New Conference Realignment Shenanigans

I honestly don't think we have a shot at moving to another conference but I hope I'm wrong.  The BE would be great but I would definetly take CUSA at this point.  "Momma says "If your gonna be a doormat, you better be the best doormat you can be (in a better conference)"".  I look at it this way, there's always that miracle shot, but if we moved to another conference, it'd probably take a few years to become competitive, until then, we are doormat material.  But look at the SEC, where Vandy has made itself quite a nice living being their doormat, and everyonce in a while they surprise someone.

I've said it before, but if we miss the boat on this expansion go around, I think we will be screwed as I feel that after all these shifts, things will remain stable for a while afterwards.  Conference commisioners will want to protect their product and I can see long term contracts becoming necessary.

What good is a media market if you don't have a fan base… just because there are TVs in homes, doesn't mean they are all watching the FAU game, so media market means squat for us!

No shot at BE, nor do we even deserve it, we'd be lucky for CUSA, but how about we dominate the Belt first?

Yep, the reality is its about potential not about right now.  Going to the Big East would dramatically change everything about our program from the recruiting to the attendance.

Howard's next job before he really does hang it up is to use his "star power" to lobby FAU into Conference USA.  Big East is not a reality.  The same people that talk Big East are the same people talking about Leach.

Re: New Conference Realignment Shenanigans

I'd love to get invited to CUSA.  It looks like UCF will get the Big East nod as early as tomorrow according to some reports tonight.  The Big East could also add Memphis and ECU from CUSA.  If CUSA loses 3 teams, I could definately see them targeting us…and probably FIU as well.  I could also see a few non-AQ conferences merge.  A league of FAU, FIU, ULM, ULL, La Tech, Tulane, Southern Miss, UAB, Troy, MTSU, WKU, and Marshall makes a lot of sense, and with 12 teams, could have a championship game.  UNT and Ark State could merge with the Western CUSA and WAC teams.

I agree with that.  My point was more how much going to the Big East would change our program.
