New York Times Pre-Season: The Quad Countdown

Oh no!

Not the Kitties!

;D

That would be AWESOME…….

On a side note:

When's the last time we had a UCF fan around here?

It's been awhile.  I'm sure they would still talk about how they would "destroy" us and would have been able to win bowl games had they played crappy MAC and C-USA teams…… I guess Mississippi State was too much talent for them to handle even with Kevin Smith… ::)

"Central Florida’s paltry top five is at least partially excused by its short history (the university didn’t field a team until 1979). As this list shows, the program is making up for lost time. Still, U.C.F. is far off 0f the top three."
Speaking of waiting for a football stadium. It took UCF 26 years to get a stadium on campus. I think FAU is not doing that bad, of course we all want the stadium. Also the lousy performance from UCF all these years maybe has to do with the lack of a football stadium on campus; therefore, the recruiting was not that great.
GO FAU! build that stadium.

Interesting that UCF is the lowest-rated of the Florida's seven Div. 1-A teams. The NYT countdown, from 120-98 (UCF) is updated at the top of Page 1 of this thread.

Yeah, I thought that was odd as well.  None the less…let's hope it's WEEKS 'till we're picked

Do not fear my FAU fans, UCF fans which follow the program know the NY Times rating is full of it, with the new OC and a top 2 defense (ECU and UCF fans argue over who is best)  and not having a true FR QB & RB, UCF will be remarkably better, we will be getting to bowl game at very least.

Last season UCF had an offense run by a true freshman QB with true freshman running backs  (our top RB left early and his backup was kicked off team) and an inexperienced line along season early season ending injuries at two top receivers AND tight end going down with injuries. This, along with the 3 plays UCF ran, resulted in a not-so-surprising dismal point production. Last year was the worst year in UCF history for UCF fans but we are still proud of our squad.  UCF now has a much improved QB from spring sq, sophomore back in Murray who has earned the RB1, improved line, finally healthy receivers and tight end and much improved offensive scheming lead by a new OC.

Preseason polls are not worth the paper written on and the fans who have been around know this.  I not going to say UCF will be great but we will end up in a bowl game with at least 7 wins and will make the noise in 2010.

I only drop over about 2x a week bc of work but I hope you all have a good season but don’t believe what a NY sports writer says about a southern FB team.

Strengths this year at UCF will be front 7 on defense and a very athletic secondary (which has all conference LB moving back to his original position at S) Most insiders think the defense will be better this year then last year.  The same defense which keep a terrible offense in ballgames and almost beat UM, USF and ECU to name a few.

On offense we will be improved but still young but play calling will be (or better be is the key word) much improved.  The fact we are going into season with a named starter at RB and QB is key bc there will be no more on the job training.  We are healthy for the first time in a while and we have a few greyshirts which will help greatly with depth.  The offense will take UCF as far as the QB will take them (the OC will coach QB too),  if we can make the other teams defense not stack the box then we will be able to have a good offense but the QB position is the key.

I saw our QB1 during spring and he looks a lot better then last year. IMO that UCF will be bowl bound and if the QB can be just average, more wins will be the resort.

Regarding bowl, I have one informant who says the 2010 Orlando bowl conference vs CUSA, is yet to be decided but after I posted I got a text from someone who said SBC will be other conference. I just hope whoever UCF plays brings alots of fans bc in the end that determines the longterm success of the bowl and each team rep for bringing fans is hard to get but easy to lose.

One thing UCF fans have is passion bc in the end that what keeps you going after a really bad year like last.

Game(s) to watch: Though Florida Atlantic has dominated the Shula Bowl, winning six of seven games against F.I.U., last year’s game showed that the gap between the two programs is closing. I’m also interested in how F.I.U. plays against the bottom of the Sun Belt – Western Kentucky and North Texas, for example. A good team blows out this type of competition.

Sounds like us a bit as well?  Rusty will be the "offense"…of course there us a question with the emergence of "Bam bam" as well…we may be able to finally put a solid run game in the mix…something you huys had solidly, and depended on with Smith…not saying Morris will be a Smith though - he was a special runner…no doubt there.

Bowl:

Could think of nothing better for interest than to have a UCF vs FAU match-up…would be a dream come true for both parties at this stage of development!

But, particularly for us - No Michigan, or New Orleans??

Sold! ;D

Re: New York Times Pre-Season: The Quad Countdown

I liked this line from The New York Times Quad Blog item about projected No. 97, FIU:

"Unfortunately, despite F.I.U.’s rapid climb under Cristobal, I still believe they are outside the top tier of the Sun Belt, an area populated by Troy and Florida Atlantic."
