say what you will about shannon at UM…he had no talent at QB at that was his downfall.  .

Ran out?  Yeah, thats how you see it huh?

Shannon fired his offensive coordinator, Patrick Nix, over philosophical differences. Nix wanted to employ more of a spread attack, whereas Shannon remained committed to Miami's traditional pro style offense.

Nix's departure was followed by news that Robert Marve, a redshirt-freshman quarterback who started 11 of Miami's 13 games during the season, asked for a release to transfer to another school.[15] Marve cited a strained relationship with Shannon as his reason for leaving.

On the heels of the Marve saga, wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie announced that he was transferring to Memphis. McKenzie became the fourth member of Shannon's first recruiting class to transfer out of the program during the off-season, joining Marve, and running back Shawnbrey McNeal.

The off-season losses continued when freshmen backup quarterbacks Cannon Smith and Taylor Cook both asked to be released from their scholarships just before the start of the 2009 season.

I would say yes…. It says these guys asked to be released…. the school didn't kick them out. Anyways, if these were bad kids, then it's on him too because he brought them in. He was huge in recruiting under Larry Coker….

Mike Leach Q&A - MensJournal.com

Kind of boring until the end..

I am looking forward to it when it comes. I’m looking for a school that wants to win football games, values graduation rate, and one where the efforts of all entities of the university are celebrated. When things were really rolling at Texas Tech, I was a part of something bigger than myself, bigger than football. You have an impact in a lot of ways, and you get to be a part of it and that’s really thrilling. It affects a lot of people. It’s gigantic. I can’t say the payoff of my time off equals that, but coaching is also limited existence. I have a lot of variety now.

It’s fair to say you’re content away from football, but not completely happy without coaching.

When during my coaching career was I going to get to experience all this? There’s a difference in experiencing it now, when I’m in my prime, instead of when I’m old and retired and forced to do it. Sure, I’m disappointed in some of the maneuvering and the double-dealing, but I’m in my prime years of coaching. I’m looking forward to getting back, but I am not unhappy.

Someone please tell me how this guy is NOT our top candidate?

Not exactly sure what this means for FAU or FIU, but thought I would share:

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/08/14/2358238/former-um-coach-butch-davis-visits.html

"Former University of Miami coach Butch Davis, present at Friday’s scrimmage, dropped by FIU’s practice again Saturday."

Could Butch be doing some recon for FAU or soon be working with FIU???

Butch was a position coach when Mario Cristobal played at UM.  Probably dropping in to see an old friend.  Also Pete Garcia was Butch's recruiting coordinator during UM's probation days.

I'm done arguing why Shanon would be a terrible hire.  There is plenty of info out there for all of you to make decisions about him.  FAU will have two less fans in the seats if they hire him.

Also, would still love to hear how the wonderful Urban Meyer went 7-5 last year with 4 of those games being easy wins vs non BCS schools.  For all purposes UF was really 3-5 vs opponents that had a real chance at beating them.  Which means he didn't outcoach anybody…he lost Tebow and suddenly was  a bad football coach?

The more and more I read your posts I understand you lack of football knowledge. Are you kidding me Urban Meyer hasnt out coached anybody? Sorry but it's hard to win a national championship every year. Don't get me wrong Johnny Brantley isnt that great of a qb, but that's not why they lost all of those games. Every program has rebuilding years look at Texas last season, but don't say Meyer is a bad coach. The guy went into Bowling Green and won. Moved to Utah and built a football culture. Took over a Florida team and in his second season won a national championship without his 'system qb'. Open up your eyes buddy, Meyer is one of the greatest gameplanners, motivators and coach of this modern era.

Yeah, he would have had a lot of 7-5 seasons in front of him if he hadn't of left UF…which I believe is the real reason he did.  You dont go 7-5 at UF if you are a great coach and game planner.  But my argument was  pal, that no matter how good a coach you are you cant win without a good to great QB, no matter if you are Urban Meyer, Randy Shannon, Mack Brown, etc.  You have an argument for that one chief?

Ron Zook & Larry Coker would like a word with you.  Both had Gatorade players of the year, elite 11 qb's etc and failed.  Charlie Weis failed not because he wasn't a good coach or had a bad qb but because he didn't recruit a defense or a good DC.  See how that works, many parts to the equation.  Stop replying like Linear Randy.

Re: Next FAU Coach?

I don't know if you can fairly judge someone on their first head coaching job.  It's obvious that Shannon made mistakes at UM, which is why he isn't there anymore, but that doesn't mean he couldn't have learned from them.  I'm sure he'll be a better head coach at his next job because of the experience he had at Miami.  It's tough to succeed at a school like that with all of their history and the high expectations.  He'd probably make a very good head coach at this level.  I think he'd make a good candidate here…that's not to say he's my preferred candidate, but we could do much worse then ending up with Randy Shannon.

Pretty much sums up how I feel about the situation.  The only caveat I have to this is that Jacory Harris's performance was a BIG reason Shannon wasn't successful.

Agree with this.  However, my main point was that you cant make the blanket statement that Shannon was a bad head coach without taking into account the QB situation.  If and its a big IF Jacory would have lived up to expectations Shannon wouldn't be part of this debate because he'd still be at UM.

I'd say the reasons he wouldnt be is he overqualified (by that I mean there has to be schools that are BCS and can pay him a ton more interested) and the lawsuits with monster TV networks (I dont know the ramifications that would have and for how long).  Other than that, this guy has to be the guy.  The things he says in the interview you posted are fantastic.
