Now or Later?

Should FAU spend its money on half an on-campus stadium (15,000 seats) for 2010 or build the full size stadium (30,000 seats) for 2011?

Half-size (15,000 seats) now
full-size (30,000 seats) later
Lockhart for Life

You must select between 1 and 41 options

I vote for now.  Make it 15k with seats/bleachers and allow overflow onto some sort of hill on one of the sidelines.  But only allow people to buy those cheap tickets once we have 15k in the real seats.  That way we could potentially fit 20k plus on in demand games.  Then when we show there is demand for 30k it should be much easier to get financing for an expansion as it would seem less risky to the people who are financing the stadium.

I like the idea, but as someone already posted, we will not get a bcs team to play us in a 15k stadium.  With no great opponents in the house, the interest wanes quickly and we don't build momentum.  See Basketball.

USF played us in Lockhart which is advertised as 18K seats and they are a BCS team.

They had no choice because we already played Minny at Dolphin Stadium that year and the rule is you cannot play more than 1 "home" game out of your "home" stadium.  Why were we playing lowly Minny at Dolphin Stadium?  Because they wouldn't play us in Lockhart.  Let's say USF will play us in our half-stadium.  How often is that going to happen?  Not enough for our students to develop an interest in FAU football.

The bigger problem is not that we play off campus…the bigger problem is we do not have enough fans.  I can't see students flocking to the on campus stadium just because it is on campus, because if they were fans, they would be able to make it to Lockhart.  Half the students that go to Lockhart leave at halftime as it is.

We must develop the fanbase.  Although I agree an on campus stadium is absolutely necessary for this program to move forward, I think many believe that simply putting a half-stadium or any stadium on campus will solve those attendance issues very quickly and my point is we do not see that loyalty in other sports (except when we play the Canes) and that goes back to the point that we need a "real" stadium on campus to be able to bring in some quality opponents.

I think you couldn't be more wrong first one of the problems with FAU it is a commuter school most kids don't feel a real connect to the school but that is changing fast with the dorms being 90 percent freshmen forcing more students to live in the sourounding area like Addison park which i heard will be all students. But an on campus Stadium creates an atmosphere when you wake up on gameday on a campus with a stadium you see tons of people tail gating wearing the school colors etc and makes you want to be a part of it. Student now wake up at FAU and have to think about driving 20 min to a dump stadium. Personally i think we should go 15k just to get something on campus but i think we will have no problem filling 15k no matter who we play.

Re: Now or Later?

I do believe that having an off campus stadium takes away from the 'aura' of college football and that it only doubles the effect of a communter school feel. But thats just me, I only went to the Troy and FIU games last year but if the games were in Boca I probably would have went to them all just because it is more appealing to get on campus to go to a game and that I personally am turned off by Lockhart… though it will not stop me from seeing games.

What happened to the rest of the games?
It did stop you from going to the other games. You are saying that only attended 2 games.
Come on people, if you really are a fan and follow the owls; be there for them.
There is nothing we can do about Lockhart, so in the meantime just be there.
ah! BE ON TIME!
There is nothing more disappointing for the players to come out and see few fans. I know the stands get full after the game starts, but you need to be there.

Yea i have to agree with Alex you still need to go to the ALL games if you can FAU needs all the support they can get and the more people that support them ALL the time the faster things like on campus satdiums and all that other stuff

Getting the stadium in Boca will garner more support from the north, i.e. Palm Beach County. They tend to shy away from traveling

Re: Now or Later?

To those who say that we won't be able to get a BCS team to play us in a 15,000 seat stadium…we've how many BCS teams play us at home? I can think of 3 in the past 4 years. OK st. in 2005 and USF and Minn in 2007. If we get the stadium on campus and stay contenders in Sunbelt and win it a few years I think the fan support will be there so that when we occasionally play a BCS team at Landshark(HA!) we'll be able to have a better turnout. How long do you think it will be if we wait for the 30,000? Ok, say the 15,000 seat stadium is a bust, doesn't that mean the 30,000 seat stadium would be too? I think something that alot of us are overlooking is how hard it is to have a consistent fan base in south florida. That is our BIGGEST problem. If we are winning, we'll have fans come out of the woodwork, if we have a few down years, forget it, we'll be just like everything other sports team down here. The Dolphins won their division last year, how many games do you think they sold out? I doubt many of them. Thats just the south Florida market. Everyone here already has their teams to follow, Yankees, Mets, Jets, just to name a few and most popular.
