Omg, we are talking about copper wire theft people! Not rape, not assault, not stealing a laptop, not selling your services for $175,000 dollars—- bloody friggin' copper wire theft.

Dumb move on the kid's part I grant you, and the charges will probably get reduced if there is a plea bargain.

Do you really think this was a one and done crime? It most likely wasn't his first try a stealing copper. I'm in the commercial HVAC business and copper theft is a huge issue especially if it's already been installed. It's double whammy, cost of copper plus labor.

I realize the value of copper wire, I really do. I wish I had a ton of it in my back yard— especially in this economy. I just don't see the heinous nature of the crime compared to other criminal acts we have seen other players engage in. Should he be off the team? Other players D-1 level have done worse, and rejoined their team. It will be interesting to see what happens with the charges.

It's not about the value of copper. It's about breaking and entering, it's about following the law, it's about respecting other people and there property…it's about realizing the you represent something bigger than youself. It's about character, or the lack there of.

Look, this coaching staff waved one of the most talented player back in 2004, Anthony Crissinger-Hill. That move broke my heart, one of my favorite FAU players…ever. But i totally understood the move then, and I would totally support it in this instance also.

Does he deserve a second Chance; Perhaps. if his legal issues are resolved, perhaps. If he finds a way to sincerely apologizes for embarrassing his teammates, perhap. if he honestly apologies to his coaching staff, perhaps. if he publicly apologizes to the FAU student body (since they pay the his athletic fees)…perhaps he can prove to everyone, that he truly wants to be a part of this program, and the university it represents.

Of course, this is all speculation talk, since the man is still innocent until proven guilty

It's just a sad situation is all.

Coach needs to kick him off the team. If he doesn't, this will set a precedent with future athletes.

I agree…. we need to kick him off, but if he wasn't convicted of anything…. its a slippery slope

He hasn't been convicted of anything…and they won't boot him until then…and even then, it would likely have to be a felony.

Me thinks he will likely plea to a lesser charge, and as long as that charge doesn't exceed a Class A Misdemeanor, he will stay on the team.

Re: Owl DB Cortez Ash Charged in Copper Wire Theft

With most Coaches it would have to be a 1st serious conviction or 2nd lesser for dismissal. For this a suspension of sime time would be appropriate though. Big programs usually suspoend for the 1st game (which is a bodybag game anyhow so who cares if a star player sits). In our case it is atually the same, except that we lose the bodybag games so no experience gained (the bad news) but also no worry about injury (the good news).

The important thing here is that Mr. Ash has learned his lesson and NEVER does anything that stupid or for that matter anything illegal again and recovers to help himself and his team and complete his education!

Wow! Got to love our legal system. He was caught on camera stealing the copper wire. He knew what he was doing, he knew it was illegal. And now he and the rest of the team knows what they can get away with.

This isn't another "Poster Party" incident. He committed theft! And just because his case has not gone to court yet, doesn't give him right to play after a bone-headed stunt like that.

Can't agree more, he should be off the team, period.

GO OWLS!
