POLL: Leavitt for FAU Head Coach #2

If he's available, should FAU hire Jim Leavitt to replace Schnellenberger?

Yes, we should hire Leavitt after Schnellenberger.
No, Leavitt would be more trouble than it's worth.
I would prefer another coach altogether.

POLL: Leavitt for FAU Head Coach #2

My point is it's still a ways off…there's no way Schnelley gets canned after this year, it's not going to happen. So for us to prognosticate on who will be available next year or the year after that and who will be the right choice is a bit premature.

Mark Richt "should" lose his job after this season…he lives in Boca, UGA has as many legal troubles as UF so he'd come with baggage too, I like him more than Leavitt.

What? It's not ridiculous. Why would Leavitt, at this point, have expressed interest in a position that isn't open yet?

This thread is about the possibility of Leavitt at FAU when there is an opening. The recruiting process would go both ways. You don't think Angelos would have him on a list of candidates? You don't think Schnellenberger, when asked who he'd like to turn the keys over to, might think Leavitt since they established a relationship back when Howard was trying to get some advice on building our program from scratch?

Yes, Leavitt has baggage. So did Schnellenberger, Jarvis, Walters, Doherty… we hire guys with baggage who were previously successful. So it's not ridiculous to consider him. He's established himself as a winner in Florida, recruiting-wise he knows the area and building a program rather than maintaining a program is obviously something he can do. He has not been snapped up yet and he may not be by the time we look for a new coach. He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who is ready to retire.

There are legitimate reasons not to take him, of course. Can he still recruit well without the BCS affiliation and more importantly, can he convince parents who might be wondering if he'd attack their son too? Would FAU want to take a chance on him since he's currently embroiled in a legal battle with USF?

He may never be affiliated with FAU. Or maybe he will be and turn this team around. It's worth considering.

As a 14 year STH(day one) from USF and also a fan of FAU(been following your team since our game in 2007) I wouldn't wish Leavitt on your program. He wasn't that strong of a recruiter, turned out to be a coaching liability(we seemed to have a different offensive scheme and OC every year) and has turned out to not seem to give a crap about the program he built.

It became very obvious as Skip gained a hold on the program that there were quite a number of issues that we just didn't see because we didn't know any better. Our team is now a team… they win together… lose together and support each other. It wasn't like that previously… it was very "me" oriented.

Leavitt does not mix well with the media. He isn't a good face for the program as he hardly does any interviews and can get very stand off ish with the media.

I wish FAU the best… would love to see the program join us in a BCS or whatever conference someday in the near future. You have great fans and a great new stadium that's going to give your program a chance to explode… you'll need a coach that can get you to that next level. Leavitt isn't that guy. There are a ton of young OC and DC's that can come to FAU and elevate the program.

Just my opinion.

I would strongly oppose Leavitt because, in part, of the reason he and USF parted ways. If an earlier poster is correct about his inability or unwillingness to deal effectively with reporters, this is another serious liability. A developing program particularly needs to be effective in this arena.
