Recruit JUCO (Jr. College) players
Simple fact is that far too many Florida kids are leaving the state for other programs and not staying to play for ours. This is really thinning the available talent pool to the point we are AFRAID to play the true freshman we recruit. Especially when we also REFUSE to recruit JUCO players. VERY sad in my opinion! And we are being passed as we speak by the other programs.

Here's one reason to recruit outside the home area: For a kid who's freezing his rear off in a northern winter, a chance to play in South Florida could look very, very attractive. Though South Florida also is attractive to Florida kids, the contrast is nowhere near so great. Examples: Play in Illinois or South Florida? South Florida is a pretty good draw. But play in Orlando or Fort Lauderdale/Boca Raton? Not so much difference. When granted advantages, why not take them?
Not everyone looks at South Florida that way though. In fact, Rusty has stated that he does not like South Florida at all and he's been one of our programs best players.

Re: Recruit JUCO (Jr. College) players
First and foremost, lots of guys from Florida are leaving to play in the MAC and BIG10. The one thing that I think is keeping FAU from pulling some of those guys in is the stadium issue. I don't care if Florida players want to see snow, Akron is nothing to get excited about. That said, there are plenty of schools in the MAC and the BIG10 of course, that are something to get excited about.
Second, I think FAU should do some strategic recruiting in northern states. As Grayowl stated, the competition is good. This doesn't mean that FAU needs to spend tons of money trying to scour the midwest for recruits. Be selective. The way things are today a lot of recruiting can be done via video conferencing etc. Spending lots of money should only come at the tail end of recruiting when guys are close to making a decision.
No matter the case, most everything depends on the construction of the stadium. That will make a monumental difference.

It's like business. You have to be in the customer's face to get the sale.
One of the main reasons recruits give for choosing a school: the university showed the most interest early on and stayed with it. Very difficult to do 600 or 1200 miles away. If we have an $85M budget like the Gators, ok then. We have an entire athletic's budget of about $12M.

Recruiting involves watching the player in game situations (not just on highlight videos). You cannot do that via video conferencing. There are tons of expenses (of both time and money) before you would even get to the video conference stage.

That is why you watch full game tapes, not just highlight videos. Anyone can look good on a highlight video. Some schools won't even take highlight videos because they aren't true representations of a players ability throughout an entire game.

Does every High School create full game videos that are available for recruiters? I am asking because I do not know the answer, but that does not seem reasonable to me.

Re: Recruit JUCO (Jr. College) players
We find recruits under the radar by going to games of Florida High Schools and watch to see who would work well in our system.
How would we begin to do this out of state on a consistent basis? We would go to High Schools of "known" recruits because we have no relationship with out of state high schools. The "known" recruits will be recruited by others, most likely. Our best shot would be to see players at those games that are not being recruited that happen to have a great game and are under the radar. That is a horrible, horrible way to utilize our resources.
