Recruiting - Truth or Rumor

I think that sometimes they make to much of a big deal with the size issue. I understand that it does matter to a point, but if a smaller player can get the job done or is a better athlete why not recruit him, it is about getting the best available that will fit into your system.

My feeling is you must remain flexible when it comes to size and the athletic ability of a player should be made prevalent.

I agree. The problem is that most schools are in the "cookie cutter" mode. "If college so-and-so got one, then I want one of the same".

Meanwhile the non-traditional thinking coaches will take the athlete and make a lot of noise because the kid may have more heart and desire than the "mold type" player.

An interesting point Bytor but very very true. Many Athele's are passed over by the bigger institutions because they don't fit the profiles. IMO this leaves a tremendous amount of atheletic talent on the table, hoping for a spot somewhere. Most of the guys end up in 1AA or 2A schools. Another big factor to add to what you stated is heart. This team was living proof of that and hopefully this continues.

O.G. Looks like we both read Bytor's post at the same time.

I know a lot of the High school coach's try to open the eye's of the college's and push some of these kid's to the big schools but as you said it's cookie cutter. Instead of working with the high school coach who know the players and has the film to back it up, those college's does'nt want to hear it.

I was talking to one of the coach's during recruiting period and he made a very interesting comment. Many of the College recruiters attitudes are "If a kid fits the mold and makes it your a hero but if the kid does'nt you still have a job. On the other hand if the kid is undersized and he does'nt make it - your fired". It may not be that drastic but some recruiters figure why take the chance, play it safe.

Schools receive lists of prospective athletes based simply on height and weight. For example, as early as a kids sophomore year he will be on a watch list if he meets minimum size requirements regardless of talent. That means any LB over 6 feet tall and 200lbs will be on the list. After schools evaluate film they eliminate the lesser players. However, physical stature is the first thing that schools look at. This means that great undersized players are often overlooked. GO OWLS!!!

I have a few success stories from school who turned down some of the players I sent tapes on. One of the best was a player who went to Texas Southern because the bigger schools didn't need someone of his size at CB. Texas Southern played Alabama A&M and the kid drew the attention of a few people in the stands. He transferred out after two years and started at Auburn last year! This year he lost his spot but played a lot in the nickle package. As a reminder, Auburn had some pretty good DB's!!

FAU will continue to get a shot at the guys the Big 3 overlook. Hopefully a few gems will shine through this year too.

Great success story O.G. It is very rare for guys to transfer up from 1-AA to 1A. You are right, undersized guys can be big contributors at the college level. Look no further than Chad Owens, WR, Hawaii. However, size does become more important at the NFL level. GO OWLS!!!

Chad Owens will make somebody very happy on the next level. The kid is like a rubber band ball. I've seen his is toughness on TV last year but to see it in person when FAU played this past season was amazing.

A "short" center, Verino from Tampa Jefferson, is on the FAU watch list. Tough kid. He'll be a good one too.

Alex is a good kid. He know a few of the current/past players at FAU. C Rodgers and A Crissinger-Hill from Jefferson and Nello Faulk from Tampa Robinson.

Our plus to land him: Mom likes to go to all of his/their games. His brother is All-World QB turned Pro WR Alan Suber from Bethune Cookman!!
The minus: Very close knit family. His brother a is rookie with the Houston Texans and may move to Southern California. Also, San Diego State offered Alex last week. His friend Jon Bailes from Jefferson is a soph with the Aztecs.. :(

Let's keep out fingers crossed.
