SBC Football: WKU Receives Verbal from Top QB Prospect

Brion Carnes, a dual threat quarterback from Manatee High school in Bradenton, FL has given his pledge to play for Western Kentucky.  He threw for 2,245 yards and 24 touchdowns in his senior year.

Willie Taggart, also a former Manatee High standout, was hired in November as Head Coach for the Hilltoppers.

Carnes had originally committed to South Florida last winter, but got news that the Bulls were pulling the offer on Friday.

He had offers from Cincinnati, Nebraska, Georgia, Clemson, West Virginia, Middle Tennesee, and UAB.

Carnes is rated the seventh best overall prospect in the country according to rivals.com and 47th best by scout.com.

Pretty big gap between 7th ant 47th either way looks like WKU got a nice recruit

I don't know what to make of this. If he really is the #7 QB in the country why is going to the #120 program? Doesn't make sense. He should have his pick of top 25 programs.

What does this mean for FAU? Will Doughty re-think his decision and come back to FAU now that he isn't the only QB recruit for WKU?

Interesting implications for sure.

Doughty had his chance here. We have 2 QB verbals. We don't need a 3rd. I'd rather use that to get a defensive player like Trevaughn Faircloth

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Something definately wrong with this picture. First, why would USF pull an offer at this time to such a highly regarded QB (grades, behavior, ???). Second, why would he then choose WKU (0-12, LAST in the nation) over the MANY BCS offers he could turn too? Something not right with this picture, connection to Taggart or not??

When you are 0-12, the only place to go is up…

He could be a star in this league with his skills, no matter who he played for…he wouldn't be in the Big10 or the SEC…

It happens Joe Flacco had offers from Pitt, Rutgers, VTech and ended up at Delaware, think about it he's gonna be the best thing to hit that campus of course he'll set every record, gets to start right away and the offense will be built around him…I mean I wouldn't do it but cant blame him

Re: SBC Football: WKU Receives Verbal from Top QB Prospect

I actually completely understand him going to WKU.  Big fish, little pond, I get it.  What I dont understand is things like this:

Rivals Pro-Style QB Rankings

#13 QB - Andrew Hendrix - Notre Dame
#28 QB - Luke Massa - Notre Dame
#31 QB - Tommy Rees - Notre Dame

Seriously??  I know how 'great' it is to be recruited by Notre Dame, play for Notre Dame, all that jazz, but if I were 18 and my name was Tommy Rees I might be thinking about the other 2 highly ranked players ahead of me, the 5 other QBs that Notre Dame already has on their roster, and I might be thinking that the University of Indiana or Purdue (assuming he likes Indiana) are looking pretty good.  And if not that, go to Bowling Green or something and put up ridiculous numbers in the MAC.

Which reminds me, why aren't we at least calling some of these kids and showing them the depth chart of the school they committed to??

I dont think these kids are scared of competition and they shouldn't be.  If you are one of the best in the country you go prove it.  If you were a top student in the country you wouldn't go to FAU even though FAU was offering you because you would by default be the smartest student on campus, you would go put your skills to the test.  Its like New York City…if you can make it there you can make it anywhere the saying goes and that intrigues people.

The QB at Notre Dame gets more coverage/press than FAU as an entire University.  I can name every QB at Notre Dame going back 25 years and I'm not even a fan.  And remember Tom Brady went to Michigan 5th on the depth chart and ended up doing alright.

If they dont feel like they will be the starting QB after a few years there..things aren't too bad.  They can transfer at that point and still play somewhere else or they can stay at Notre Dame and get a free education at a school that costs the average person $150,000.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.
