SGA - Schnellenberger Stump

Apparently SGA is pursuing a replica of Coach Schnellenberger's recruiting stump for the Breezeway.

Anybody have any more info about this?

I assume this would be a permanent installation, perhaps at the south end of the Breezeway near the cafe? I've seen pictures of him standing out by (what is now) the Starbucks…

In any case, I think it's a great idea. This is how you build a campus that's proud of its roots and traditions.

Re: SGA - Schnellenberger Stump

it was going to be a replica stump, but it got changed into a large bronze plaque that describes the stump and how coach used to "preach" from it.  its going to be really nice.

Nothing beats the real thing, a plaque come on where is the fun in that? SG's got to have some money with those higher fees getting charged to get a bronze stump and make sure you bolt it down (tamper resistant) so no FIU fans can steal it.

Like I said, I really like this idea and we're fortunate to have such great FAU pride initiatives from SGA lately.

The fully realized idea should be a bronze stump with a plaque next to/above it explaining it. That's how any other football school in the nation would do it, so that's what we should be shooting for ultimately.

I understand if it's a financial issue (the plaque's budget alone is $5,000). But there's really no rush to do this; if the money isn't there for both pieces now, SGA could wait until it is.

Or if this is a case where SGA has leftover money in their coffers and needs to spend it by the end of the summer or they lose it, then it makes sense to erect the plaque now but save room for the stump so you can write a bill for that in the Fall.

That's all I'm saying. Plaques in and of themselves are usually passed right by and no one sees it. Ask how many people have ever seen the plaque outside of Traditions Plaza.

But a bronze stump… people will be intrigued and read the plaque.

How about a statue of Coach S. on the stump! And either put it in the breezeway of statium or alumni center by Owlsey!

No no no. We already have a statue of Coach in the stadium - we don't need two.

In addition to the stump, they're going to put up a Lyndon B. Johnson plaque; I assume it will be by the library with some of his remarks made at the university's dedication. That's fine as just a plaque.

I'm pretty astounded that the university has never started a campaign to build a monument marking FAU as "the birthplace of Ocean Engineering."

It's one of the university's greatest accomplishments, yet we have nothing to show for it. Think about it: an entire field of engineering, now studied all over the world, came about here at FAU.

This is a tremendous oversight and as soon as I have the $50,000 (I'll need at least a decade) to donate to the statue, I will. But maybe we won't have to wait that long…

it's going to be a pretty large plaque, as far as i know…. i don't think you'll be able to miss it.  Hey, its better than nothing and the stump can always be added in the future when the funds are available.

Good question…anybody?

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.
