If he's such an attractive prospect than why was he fired?

Who knows, but he's been a successful AD at 2 schools that are now both at a level we'd like to be at.  I think that's at least worth an interview.

Agreed. Let's be honest here, were not the most attractive girl at the dance right now.

Neither is he!

;D

Maybe not, but I'd still at least interview the guy.  We are looking for someone to do exactly what he did at UCF and SMU (get facilities upgraded and get into a better conference) so why not talk to him?

Can't hurt to talk to him, there are ~60 apps in already, the more the merrier.  He can't be all bad getting June Jones to come over from Hawaii.

Re: SMU Fires AD

Just from reading some articles online, it appears that Orsini and the University President had some sort of falling out over the last few weeks.  That doesn't sound like a reason to not at least talk to the man.  Who knows if he's even interested (he was making about $430K at SMU, so this job would be a pretty big cut in pay….although that is still better than $0), but I'd hope we at least make a phone call.

It should be pointed out, for everyone that questioned the timing of letting Angelos go(after letting him choose the next football coach and all), SMU just did the same thing.  Orsini was just allowed to hire a new basketball coach (Larry Brown) a few weeks ago and then got fired.  So at least we can take comfort in knowing we aren't the only ones making oddly timed decisions.  :D

Re: SMU Fires AD

Since when are we a school that shy's away from personnel that may have had personal problems in the past?

Howard, Jarvis, Pelini.. Even some of the new coaches of the football staff.

No one is perfect. I think this guy can be good for us. We all hate UCF, but we all wish we could be like them right now. They started in the same place we did and have upgraded their facilities and have now accepted an invite into the Big East. Say what you will about that conference, point is look where we are and look where they are.

At the very least I think we need to interview him and see what he has to offer.

I agree, but the cut in pay, would be a step down. Yet I think he could turn us around.

In this economy, the unemployed can't be greedy. It's one thing if he has a load of offers to choose from and we come in at the least amount of money. If not, beggars can't be choosers

Re: SMU Fires AD

This guy is known as a "builder" and a fundraiser…two things we really need here. Sounds like he and the Prez disagreed on some things and at a school like SMU, there are a few VERY powerful boosters that hold the pursestrings…if one of those boosters wanted something done that Orsini wouldn't do, or vice versa, then they have the ability to influence an unexpected change like this.

THIS…is what we need at FAU:
SMU added more than $6.6 million in annual gifts and $10.5 million in total gifts under Leonard (Assoc AD under Orsini). SMU sources say that in the last two fiscal years alone, annual giving to SMU Athletics has increased over 40 percent under Leonard's watch.

Exactly. If there's a better offer out there, he'll take it.

Apparently, we can only offer X even if the industry standard is Z. There's no use having the conversation of,

"We can offer X."
"Yes but the industry average is Z, so X is an insult."
"That may be but we can only afford X."
"But Z is the average. We should be offering Z."
"I understand that but we don't have Z to give. We have X."
"You don't understand. If we want to be serious we need to offer Z."

and around and around and around.

Does anyone think we have a shot here at hiring him?

Re: SMU Fires AD

Depends on what other AD openings are ou there.

Like Coach Pelini said when he was hired, there are only 120 or so Head Coach jobs availalbe, and the same goes for the AD position.

I wonder if an AD could get a "Bonus" contract like Coach Pelini got tied into fundraising and ticket sales?

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.
