Spring training!

Spring training!

QB and O-line are obviously the two HUGE factors to be decided…

The D might be able to stop the 30 yard dashes with the new scheme, but if we don't have a qualified leader/passer and protection for him it won't matter.

Re: Spring training!

I have a feeling that Stephen Curtis ends up our starter.  I just dont think Kooi or Wilbert have it.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

I think it's Wilbert's too lose. Curtis is really far behind in terms of getting reps in the actual offense, instead of running the scout team.

Any one else heading out there tomorrow to watch the first practice?

Re: Spring training!

Here's FAU's release for Wednesday's activities:

Florida Atlantic University’s football team met on the gridiron for the first day of spring drills, Wednesday. While the team began preparation in the meeting rooms Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger was the guest of FAU President Mary Jane Saunders and Athletics Director Craig Angelos at a meeting to present the stadium to the media.

Schnellenberger meet the team on the field where the Owls dedicated the first 20 minutes of practice towards individual drills. Both the offense and defense stayed with their position coaches to install the pass schemes. The following 30 minutes featured seven-on-seven while the linemen concentrated on skills. Installing the run broke up the drills and preceded 20 minutes of team drills. Special teams drills ended the day.

During seven-on-seven Graham Wilbert and David Kooi took most of the reps at the quarterback position, completing numerous passes to wide receiver Byron Hankerson who had one stand out catch from Kooi down the middle of the field between three defenders. Travis Jones and 2010 second team All-SBC Team running back Alfred Morris also shared the majority of the handoffs on offense.

On defense, David Hinds had great pressure on the receivers intercepting one pass and deflecting another. Brian Sirmans also picked off a pass and played well on defense.

FAU will be back on the field Friday at 3:30 p.m. for the final scheduled day of no pads. All practices are free and open to the public. Scrimmages are scheduled for April 9 and 16 with the spring game concluding the spring workouts on April 23. Scrimmage times are to be determined.

Fe! Fi! Fo! Fum! Look out people here we come. Get ready here we come! I think that's a good marketing Idea. Go Owls, Show the world! The Temptations would love it also. 8)

Re: Spring training!

Here is what I picked up from yesterday…

Wilbert looked a tad off during the qb drills and pass skeleton, throwing a lot of balls that weren't completed or dropped. Once the team, moved into 7-on-7s Kooi looked like the more impressive of the two. I had always doubted Kooi's ability to be the starter come fall, but if he can continue what I saw yesterday, I'm optimistic.

As for the 3-4, it was difficult to tell, w/o pads on. I love the linebacking core, (Morgan, Johnson, Hinds and Henry) that looks like the strength of the team.

Hinds was clutch in pass coverage, knocking down passes, and grabbing an interception. He by far stood-out on defense, as a play maker.

At receiver, there are problems. This is the weakest I have ever seen the unit. Byron Hankerson did manage a few grabs in team drills, but overall this is a struggling unit.

One guy to keep your eye on is safety Cortez Ash. DB coach Dick Hopkins gives him an ear-load every play, but with Austin Jensen and Marcus Bartles out with injuries, he has room to move up the charts. I'm very impressed with his size and speed.

*Spoke with Willie Floyd and he still hasn't heard about his 6th year of eligibility. He mentioned he wishes that he was taking part in spring drills, as he would be lining up at wide receiver.

*Former Linebacker Michael Lockley was assisting coaches with the LB's…

Re: Spring training!

Delt or anyone else who was there.

Ive been hearing that the Nose tackle position will be CRITICAL in terms of freeing up the LB's to get pressure. Im sure its not easy to tell without pads but if you could maybe see how the Dline is handling the switch I would be truly appreciative.

;D

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.

Jarvis Givens looks like a man-child out there and I can't wait to see him in pads. Like you said, it's hard to tell on day-one how the 3-4 did, but multiple times in the team drills the defensive line was sacking the QB.

I think the true test with the 3-4 will be how Cory Henry and Martin Wright can adjust to playing more of a linebacker type role. At one point in practice Coach Van was screaming at them about there footwork.
