Steele explains his logic to Hutton
LOGIC OF STEELE
I talked with Phil Steele earlier this week to talk about why he has FAU going 10-2 and ending the season as the 37th best team in the country.
The reasons are obvious to Owls fans, but here is what Steele had to say:
“The have one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Rusty Smith. He’s tall, has a good arm and makes great decisions. He fits perfectly in Schnellenberger’s offense. I love the receiving corps. They are tall and athletic and make the big plays. The offensive line is solid, and I have it as the second best in the Sun Belt.
The defense has eight starters back. They gave up a lot of points, but they still won games. Polo had a tremendous first half of the season, and he may not be the best corner on the team. They have the complete package athletically.
Schnellenberger is one of the best coaches around. Look at what he has done.
I see them sweeping the Belt and picking off a couple non-conference games.”
Steele does his homework. He talked about how he thought FAU played very well in the first half against Florida, and talked with authority about the South Florida game. It was clear to me had had seen a lot of video on the Owls.
I asked him if he thought FAU could beat Texas. “I think Texas will be on guard. They will know about FAU. But they are a young team, with just 11starters back. They are loaded along the line of scrimmage, offense and defense. But if they don’t play well, FAU has a chance.”

Re: Steele explains his logic to Hutton
He uses about 6 different formula's that he himself derives…it is quite complex to say the least…
He calls them "sets of my power rankings"…
If you haven't bought a copy of his 2008 season preview, you really should consider it…not just for FAU, but all Teams…if you are a big college football fan that is to say

+1
I haven't been able to put the thing down. Not only do I read about my favorite teams, but you can get a very good idea of your opponents for the season. He also writes some pretty good articles on other football related topics throughout the mag.
Best $10 I've spent in awhile.
