Stocking Filled With Coal

Okay Santa, no changes with our coaching staff ?

I know HS opens our stadium, but I thought we would see a little shuffling with the staff.

Re: Stocking Filled With Coal

I don't know about ProuOwl but I had hoped a new OC  and whomever is designated as our recruiting coordinator at minimum. Our O was awful last year and actually GOT WORSE not better as the year went on. Wc did betten on O in several if not all OOC games than the friggin Belt games, especially the final two.

I know some will say "but the was MTSU and Troy". SO what! They had very mediocre years as teams and had some awful games on D during the years, even in their conference games.

And I know some will say "but our O-line and no starting experience". Again, So! They should have at least showed steady improvement, not one ok game than 3 stinkers.

And let's not even argue about play calling or how extremely boring our approach is. We now have to fill seats in our own stadium not the rented shithole on Commercial.

When the D was awful last year(with 8 or 9 new starters) the DC was changed and the D got better (not in the last three games though - a big concern for me, the D improved but still was NO MATCH for any big or decent programs O). But if the O could do anything with the ball, that would sure have helped.

I just hope that if Howard is staying (and he will), that changes are made to show that 4-8 is not good enough and that the program will be taken serously again.

Re: Stocking Filled With Coal

What do you think the OC could have done differently last year?  Hoza deserved to be fired after the 2009 season.  That D was a confused mess.  This year's offense was a failure due to the offensive line and nothing more.  This same OC and offensive system was in place in 2009 and was one of the best offenses in the nation.  To me, he did nothing to lose his job…no OC in the country could have done anything with an O-line as bad as ours was.  The problem with the OL was talent and inexperience.  It was also hit with injuries throughout the year.  No amount of coaching was going to change that.  Making a change in OC would be just making a change for change sake.

I understand the fustration, but we are looking at a complete coaching staff makeover in the near future anyway.  Changing OCs now wouldn't make any sense….especially in the heart of recruiting season.

Re: Stocking Filled With Coal

I've hinted at this before, so I'll say it another way:

There were 107 players on the 2010 FAU roster.

50 overall Freshmen (33 True Freshmen + 17 Redshirt Freshmen). Almost half of the entire roster was Freshmen. This makes sense since we have been around for about 10 years. With 5 years of eligibility for most players, it's the second wave.

So some say we have not recruited wisely. I think this coaching staff has done well considering the fact that we have promised almost every recruiting class, an on campus stadium since day one, only to deliver a high school playoff field. So we lose them to other more established programs…even to other Sun Belt Schools. I'm not saying that the coaching staff is blameless here, but they have done well considering all the financial constraints they have been given.

I think the Hoza move was needed last year…and Howard pulled the trigger. But to have change for the sake of change can sometimes do more harm than good.

Re: Stocking Filled With Coal

hey Prowler, look at any roster in the country.  I believe you will find roughly 50 redshirt and first year freshmen.  A typical FBS conference team will have 110 to 130 players.  On average, any given team will welcome 25-30 new players each year between scholarship signees and walk-ons.  Hopefully, you retain the better majority of these student-athletes.  And, if you have done your job recruiting and timing things properly, very few of the true freshman, particularly in a mid-major program, will play in their first year.

Guess what, that means each year, you'll lose 25 guys and gain 25 guys.  25 times 5 years equals a 125 man roster.

I'm not arguing for or against the point you are making, only wanted to point out that 50 freshmen on a roster in actually very normal.

Re: Stocking Filled With Coal

Sad point to me is that we have 33 true freshman and how many did we "sign" as recruits, 12 and not all of those made it to campus! that makes for one heck of a lot of walk-ons. And anyone who thinks that is how you build a winning program, it ain't!

Building the stadium is wonderful and highly needed, but it seriously ups the ante financially to fiill those seats. We have to upgrade our coaching budget and recruiting budget if we are to compete, even in the SunBelt, the other league members are adjusting, are we???

I'm not even sure why you follow this program anymore. 95%+ of your posts have been about your disappointment with the program. That's gotta be causing a lot of unnecessary stress in your life.

LOL.  We had a bad year…I understand being upset about that, but the season is over…a new stadium is coming…get over it.  One way or another, GeorgiaOwl, you'll get your way next year.  If we rebound and have a good season, we'll be back to competing for the title where we should be…and if not, Coach will have finished out his contract and we'll be looking for a new head of the program.  My advice is to just keep watching the webcam…it's a constant reminder that things are about to get better for our program.  Go Owls!!
