It's because people writing about recruiting do not know anything about recruiting but they know people love to read about it.  People write and talk about recruiting but have never even seen the players play.  They regurgitate junk from other sources and come up with their own opinions based on nothing.  And foolish people believe garbage.

The journalists trust that the scouting sites know what they are talking about. This isn't exclusive to recruiting; for instance, if a journalist publishes a story about a new pill that cures melanoma, they have to trust that the scientists know what they're talking about too - they weren't there in the lab doing research either.

I think evaluating the talent of a highschool senior is a little different than the efficacy of a drug…little stricter guidelines on the latter.

Of course there is. But a journalist isn't going to be concerned with the politics of the star system, whether it's truly representative of that player's potential and what it means regarding the overall strength f the class. All they care is: this is a well-known scouting site, I'll defer to their "expertise."

As much as they sometimes do curious things like instant rankings increases or whatever - you can't argue with the fact that the big boy schools ALL put credence in the star system and actively pursue the highest rated players - not zero or two stars - they may fill thier final slot(2) with a few but the VAST majority are 3 star or higher, not FAU's typical less than 10%.

Exactly.  That is what the star system is for…the Top 25.  Beyond that, there is no way anyone can evaluate 1000s of players.  Impossible, so it becomes a bunch of BS to garner hits on websites.

I hate the star system because of where we reside in the process.  It is for the Top 25.  Beyond that, it is simply a way to get hits on blogs and websites.  When we get in the top 25 let's talk intelligently about recruiting…
