When you can write a story and it reaches 385,000 people then I will say we have more clout, as of now all 20 of us frequent posters mean nothing compaired to the amount of people Ted Hutton reaches every day. When you put out a FAU flier that reaches that many subscribers they you will have some pull. Its media, to most it is as truthfull as the bible. $10 bucks says Ted doesnt make the hula bowl a big deal….

2 Owls head to Hula Bowl

More evidence that Florida Atlantic's football program is growing up fast came Wednesday when it was announced two Owls will be playing in the Hula Bowl on Jan. 22.

Quarterback Jared Allen and linebacker Chris Laskowski were invited to the annual all-star game at Kihei, Maui that gives seniors a chance to show their stuff in front of NFL scouts and a national television audience.

"It validates to all the collegiate fans around the nation that our program has come to a high level," FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger said.

For Allen and Laskowski it will mean a return trip to Hawaii, where the Owls opened the 2004 season with an upset over the University of Hawaii Warriors at Honolulu.

"I'm pretty excited," said Allen, who was a four-year starter for FAU and ended with 8,100 yards passing and 50 touchdowns. "It's a great opportunity to sell yourself."

"I'm thrilled that I was chosen. It's going to be fun to go out there again and visit the place we had our first big win of the season," said Laskowski, who had 295 tackles in his career.

FAU finished the season 9-3.

Laskowski and Allen were part of FAU's first recruiting class and both played in all 47 games in the Owls four-year history. The duo will be making more history as the first Owls to participate in an all-star game.

Schnellenberger said the selection came at a good time for FAU as "it will help us in recruiting that is going on right now."

Laskowski and Allen will play for the East team, coached by Mark Richt of Georgia, who is from Boca Raton and played under Schnellenberger at the University of Miami.

Allen joins Virginia Tech's Bryan Randall and Ryan Fitzpatrick as quarterbacks.

On defense, Laskowski will get a chance to go against West quarterback Timmy Chang again.

Chang, who set the NCAA record for career passing yards this season, passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns against the Owls, but FAU beat Hawaii in overtime 35-28 on Sept. 4.

Schnellenberger said participating in the practices and the game will give Allen and Laskowski a chance to showcase their skills.

"We haven't been on the same field with the middle and upper echelon of Division I, and the scouts and pros will have a better chance to evaluate them," Schnellenberger said.

Allen (6-foot-3, 213 pounds) graduated Dec. 10 and is back at Edmond, Okla., where he planned on working out while waiting for the NFL Draft.

"Jared is about the average height of an NFL quarterback, and he can show them how he has been schooled in offense," said Schnellenberger, referring to the pro-style offense Allen has run for the past four years.

"That will be a plus," Allen said. "It's not like we are wishbone team. A lot of NFL teams are doing what we do."

Laskowski (5-10, 218), who also graduated Dec. 10, is undersized for an NFL linebacker and was still pondering his next move when the Hula Bowl invitation came.

"This helped my decision process in a hurry. This is a chance to make an impression," Laskowski said.

Both players said they will be going to Hawaii with the intention of being sure their teammates and the NFL scouts get a good impression of FAU from their first chance to see two of its players.

"We want to let them know we are on the map. This will help our school, another step for our program," Laskowski said.

bighooter, dude, you're right. You've converted me, because we all know the bible is 100% accurate, right?

Everyone bow down to the power of the great and all mighty Ted Hutton before he strikes up down for being non-believers.

What a crock… by the way, what power does he have again? Does him reporting news make him a deity? He's not making this stuff up. It's not like he's even a columnist giving a negative opinion about the school. Stuff happens, he reports it.

Look you can dislike his writing style and you can even dislike him as a person, I wouldn't know, never met the guy. But for you to claim that he for some reason has it out for the university is completely comical.

Oh and by the way, writers have no say as to what a headline reads, that's the job of copy editors. And if you still have a problem with it, talk to the sports editor at the Sun-Sentinel. I'm sure he'd love to hear you conspiracy theories.

What a joke… can't you find a more productive outlet for you time?

Its a figure of speach dumb ass.... get the snow out of your ears. And when you have that many readers what you say does have an influence... who do you think has a bigger audience ted hutton or all 20 of us. Gee... theres a tough one... How about you produce your own column and get that many readers then you can run your mouth. As far as your comment goes "dont you have anything better to do with your time" sorry if you dont like one artical I wrote.... you must not have anything better to do if you replied to it.. and as far as the headlines... he makes his own.. the editor writes the big news headlines... are you done running your mouth about a post that you dont even like?

Tell me again what he is influencing, FAU's attendance… Frank Brogan's decisions… the overall image of the university? Please enlighten us, I really need to know.

Hutton writes his articles, slanted as they may be, but he's not making stuff up. That's his job to report what happens at FAU. OK, so maybe his audience is more than the 20 people here. I wouldn't know, I don't read that rag of a paper he works for.

And no, he does not write the FAU headlines, or headlines of any size for that matter. He is a REPORTER. They have people who work on the sports desk called COPY EDITORS who read his stuff and write the headlines (big ones and small ones) as well as the photo captions. Please only comment on things you have a clue about.

But it continues to amaze me how some people here have to respond to oposing views with such venom and ignorance. Sophomoric replies like "dumb ass" really are getting tiresome.

So you really have no idea as to what he writes about, since you don?t read it, huh? And he did influence brogans decision on the Ying Yang twins, after all he was the one who printed the lyrics and gave it to Brogan, he doesn?t work at some office at the Sun Sentinel headquarters, he works out of the Oxley center.
There is the truth but you can skew it to either a pro or con view… he chooses the hype up the con more than the pro. As far as me only writing about stuff I know about, I have met with Ted on more than a few occasions, I know what he does.

I do believe that it was you who replied to my comment making fun of the biblical analogy and mocking my post. And with the dumb ass comment… don?t pretend like you have never said anything of that nature, are you saying that you have never yelled out ?bull shit? at a football game. Are you that much above all of us profanity using college students that no dirt has ever escaped from your unsoiled, mouth?

Im done….

I must agree with Bighooter in regards to Ted. I happen to read "the rag of a paper" because it is still hard to find worthwhile coverage and articles on the owls. While I neither like nor dislike Ted, he does have a tendency to "report" good news but "extenuate" the bad. That may be his style, so be it. Unfortunately, if your are not still fully connected to the FAU campus, the only way you can get news on the Owls is via the media outlets SS and PBP. Therefore, that is the extent of his influence on the Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach areas.

Also, it isn't that we think Ted has it out for the university, we just think he focuses more heavily on the bad news, like most media outlets do!!!!

Finally, Ted is influencing the local public opinion of the football team. Locals may not know anything of the Owls other than that which he writes about. I wouldn't be surprised if one particularly bad article before a football game could in fact influence attendance…

It is in these subtle issues that we (or I) have indifferences with Ted.

Let's reply nicely please 8-)
