The Brian Wright Poll

Should he lead the Owls to 4 straight wins, do you retain Brian Wright as Head Coach?

Yes
No

Post

I like coach Wright and feel like he should get a fair shake as head coach. Tulane was a quality win. That said, I have faith in Chun's search for what he feels would be the best fit for the program.

Wright 2014.

I like the idea that we wouldn't have to pay Wright a huge salary and could use that money to add a talented coordinator that can recruit.

What's not a huge salary?   If he got the offer and he accepted you don't think he will get something similar to what Pelini had?

I am referring to the notion that we would pay a guy like Fickell $750,000 or so.  Chun has stated he is prepared to pay a head coach such as Fickell a sizable amount more than Pelini was earning.

A guy like Wright doesn't have the leverage to demand a Fickell type salary, not even sure we would need to offer him a Pelini type contract.  Assuming Wright would accept somewhere in the $350k + bonus type salary for the first 3 years to prove himself and assuming Chun would spend the $400,000 difference between a Fickell type hire and the imaginary number I just proposed for Wright we could hire and OC and DC that would be huge upgrades.

I'm well aware I am speaking in huge hypothetical's but assuming we could hire coordinators at $350k or so a piece, we could really build a special staff.

Whoever gets the job will make at least what Pelini was making, if not more.   Pelini was making the 2nd lowest salary in CUSA.  My guess is that if Wright gets the job, he'll get somewhere over $500K per year.  Someone like Fickell is going to cost at least the $600K he's currently making at OSU.

For now, I think Brian Wright should be the front runner as a candidate.  The Owls need to win their remaining games to make him a deserving hire.  Time will tell.

I dont agree, there is no reason to pay Wright that kind of money…nobody else would.  Where he currently is, he would be lucky to have a head coaching job.  Let him make $400k for a 3 year term…the program progresses he earns a bigger deal.

Fickell would cost us $750,000k.  He has much more experience at a much larger program than Wright.  Also has recruiting experience over Wright.

I would only want to hire Wright if we could upgrade at DC and OC signifiantly to make up for his inexperience.

You have to pay the going rate for a head coach in CUSA.  You either think Wright is worth that or you don't hire him.  You really think Wright would/should accept getting paid less than Ron Turner if Chun decides that he is the right person for the job?

I agree 44, this isn't a time to "get a deal", pay the man fairly or live with the consequence of having an employee that's spiteful to an organization who he knows ripped him off, salaries are public knowledge in football.

You can argue that he should be paid toward the bottom of the range of CUSA coaches due to his experience, so $500k is fair but lowballing the guy isn't the way to gain momentum.

+1 He will have to be paid a fair wage…no bargains, we have gone on the cheap in other sports over the Angelos tenure and look how many conference banners we have hung…also 3 years is nothing, it has to be a minimum of 4 years but probably 5.  A head coach needs a full recruiting cycle or he is toast in the living rooms of recruits.

I already posted this, but here goes again. $400,000 plus incentives that can bring him to $550,000 per season.

Money will still be available for coordinators at $200,000 per.

That makes more sense than paying Fickell $700,000 plus just because of his name.

GO OWLS!!!

No.  You don't want to be the team paying your head coach the lowest in the conference.  Pay the going rate to the guy you hire or hire someone else that you are willing to pay the going rate.  It's not good practice to try to get a head coach on the cheap.  You just end up paying for it in the long run.
