Not to throw a bucket of cold water on the celebration of yet another Shula Bowl win, but this D is still a mess and MUST be fixed for next season.  I hope that Coach doesn't look at the fact that we won the last 2 games and decide to stick with the status quo for next year.  All of the same issues we had against Troy, UAB, MTSU, and Wyoming were all still on full display the last 2 weeks.  The only difference is that we were facing 2 of the worst offenses in the nation in WKU and FIU.  Those 2 teams finished the year tied for 100th in the nation in total offense.  FIU averaged 322 yards per game.  We allowed them 445.  IMO, a change in the coaching staff is required.  Inexperience is not an acceptable excuse.  In 2007 we were 82nd, in 2008, with a team full of seniors, we got worse and finished 92nd.  Now we are 112th.  This unit needs a new leader.

Our offense finished 22nd in the country.  Our RB lead the Sun Belt in rushing and JVC stepped in for Rusty and played extremely well.  With even an average D, we are finishing up our best season ever and heading to a 3rd straight bowl.  This isn't a one year problem.  They have to address it and now.

I agree…and will add…not only were the last 2 wins against 2 of the worst teams in the country, but all 5 of our wins were against 5 of the worst teams in the country.  We could be in the bottom 10 and still get 5 wins every year.  Not good enough.  Changes need to be announced in the coming week or so.

Good point.  We lost a home game to Wyoming. They are 112th in the nation in total offense and average less then 300 yards a game.  They put 30 points on us and racked up 421 yards.

It's painfully obvious that the D ruined our season this year.  Not making a change sends the message that what happened this season is acceptable.  Hoza maybe a nice guy and all, but like I said, this is not a problem unique to this year.  This D has been a problem since we moved to I-A and it is time we address the core problem.  These coaches recruit and teach these players and for 3 seasons now, the unit has regressed.  It's time for FAU to step up and make the proper moves to assure that this type of thing doesn't happen again.

Re: The Defense...

Losing your job is part of the coaching business.  They all know it.  I seriously hope Howard does not keep people for some loyalty reason because if those same coaches were having great success here, they would leave for better jobs in a minute…so it comes with the territory.

Re: The Defense...

I do feel there is a loyalty issue at play…I stated this early and it was from something Howard said on a TV broadcast, he hasn't fire anyone in 25 years and Hoza has been with him for 15 of those.

That been said…loyalty is a good thing, but it can also become an anchor.

If Bobby Bowden can "fire" his son, Howard can let Hoza go.  I'm all for loyalty, but when something clearly isn't working, you change it.  They have to do something here or we are doomed for more of the same next year.

As hard as it is it has to happen, that is the responsibilty of a good manager as hard as it is. You can keep someone as long as you can but if your productivity is falling like a rock and you clearly identified the problem, you have the decision fix it (that hasn't worked),  or to remove and replace it.
