The "I don't want to go off on a rant here but..." Thread

Post

"Give Walty and I some order forms, credit card processing machines, and a fifth of whiskey and we'll turn this ship right around."

Haha, thats awesome.

Regarding the open position, like I mentioned before FAU spends $27+ million $$$$ on athletics.  If they want a serious sales team in place that will make a difference they need to spend money (especially in management positions) to get the job done.  Offering a $45k salary isn't going to bring in the required talent to make a difference.

I hear what SigEp77 is saying about bringing in the added events to game days.  I disagree to a degree, only because until we are consistently winning games you have to arm your sales reps with something to overcome objections on why a person wont buy season tickets to a year in and year out 3-9 football program.  Football games have to be an event.  Most people that are mildly interested arent going to put together a full tailgate (just too much work).

Few suggestions:

1.  An effective sales team with a plan.  I could write this out but it would take much longer than people would be willing to read.  You need an accomplished and effective leader at the top that knows how to implement and execute the plan.  This person will require more than $45k per year.

2.  Reference what other Universities do to drive ticket sales.  Thier are MANY other Univeristies our size and with low win % that sell MANY more tickets than we do.  WHY?  What are they doing differently?

3.  The suggestions SigEP77 mentioned above.  Need to be connected with the community and various groups to get them to the games.

so could it better if we hired a outside firm to handle all the marketing.

Hire an outside firm? How about just hiring the crew at UCF! Look at this article about all the things they're doing to attract fans:

Look at all the things UCF is doing to try and attract fans at home games this year. And that's coming off the 0-12 debacle last season!

“Coach Frost’s goal as a coach is to win every game. Our goal as a marketing team is to sellout every game. That’s what you strive for,”. Are you guys hearing anything like this from our team?

fausports.com Athletics Announces Fan Experience Changes for Home Football Game - Florida Atlantic Official Athletic Site

And here's what we put out. UCF is doing concerts, fireworks, and entertainment to attract fans. What from that article would you say we are doing to attract fans? If I wanted a chicken sandwich or ice cream I'll just go to those places around town lol.

We all konw its a challenge to attract fans. But are we even trying? Boy, I hope the crowd this Saturday is better than Southern was! Charlie's gonna need it!

Oops! I got moving to fast in the hurry up offense! Here's the UCF story I was talking about:

I don't think people are going to come to a FAU Football game to see a motocross guy or eat a fancy hotdog

Maybe. Hard to know til you try. I'm always surprised what people are into.

Still, it feels like FAU is more about the "let's just go with the tried-and-true" approach.

Doesn't take a genius to come up with "First Responders Day".

We need to think outside the box.

Speaking of watch parties, this is what the Tilted Kilt in Boca Raton is advertising for Saturday:

FYI the sales staff tries everything suggested here, at the end of the day nobody in S. Fla wants to go roast in the heat to watch FAU lose every week.  Another FYI, sales staff is paid 24k a year (11/hr), people make more working at Costco.

What the heck does $11 an hour have to do with it?  This is a first step in hopefully many.  Don't like the pay, don't take the frickin job!  The entitlement attitude really pisses me off.

Do us a favor and go work at Costco, let me know how that works out for you in 10 years.

Exactly…and the problem with this is the talented people in the labor force choose not to.  Ah, sweet capitalism.

Ask John Z how working for $11 an hour at FAU worked out for him, it's called training and putting in your time.  You don't get paid $20 an hour to learn, doesn't work that way.

Btw…capitalism is very sweet and works better than any other option out there.
