The Owl Auction

The auction for the last several years was tied in with a dinner and silent auction usually in april of every year, last year Lee Corso was the guest speaker and there was about 300 people in attendance.  It is a major fund raiser for athletics and I was shocked they didnt do it this year.  This must be the replacement for it and it obvously will not raise anywhere near the amount raised in the previous years.  Athletics missed the boat by not having the banquet this year coming off the bowl victory and trying to raise money for the new stadium.

I brought a friend last year, BIG UM guy, got him to buy season ticket last season and he thought it was a great night and ask me several times  when FAU was going to do it again - he personally dropped 1K that night.

I like the set-up they had, sure some items didn't get much interest, but there was enough items to keep things reasonable for everyone to walk out of there with what they wanted.  These are the social events that newcomers can come to and enjoy an nice evening and get a good feel for athletics.  I was able to introduce him to Howard, Hoza, Lamont and a few other & of course the guest of honor.

They could have done something really special this year, especially with a New Orleans win under their belt.

Re: The Owl Auction

I don't know the reasoning behind why FAU is doing an online auction…but… an idea/thought…

I work in higher education in Texas. We are receiving e-mails weekly about online auction sites that are breaking into the higher education industry and want to partner with schools. These auctions are not a replacement of the Owl Club Auction or any other large auction event, IMO.

These seem to be supplemental fund-raising efforts throughout the year that do not take many human-hours, like planning a large-scale auction, or even a small fund-raising golf tournament.

IMHO, these auctions that FAU and other schools are doing are supplemental fund-raising efforts and aren't going to replace the large fund-raising auctions in the future.

Why FAU didn't have an Owl Club Auction this year is beyond the scope of my knowledge. Possible reasons I can think of include not being able to bring in a "big name" to speak at the event (i.e. Lee Corso), no one with the experience to head up the event (Shelley Binegar left for Northern Illinois last summer and she was in charge of the event the last few years) or maybe with all the fund-raising and event planning gurus FAU has trying to raise money for the stadium, the Auction got the ax this year.
