Can owls be trained to do that like Hawks? I thought that was always the issue

Owls can be trained for falconry and they are. The main reason they are not used instead of hawks is because owls prefer to hunt at night.

Here is a clip. Be patient. The actions starts at about 30 seconds.

Here is one with a Snowy Owl. I've read they are ferocious in the wild.

Re: The Red Blob

This thread is awesome.  Reads like a Monty Python skit.  I just wanted to post in it.  Thanks.

Re: The Red Blob

I talked about doing this in a Game Ops meeting in 06 (I think it was 2006)

- Owls are nocturnal
- Owls are hard to train
- We are Burrowing Owls…what would be the point of using another Owl? Even if we did…
- We have to pay to have a trained Owl
- Same reason we can't have a game-ball delivery from a skydiver, or planes flying overhead with banner ads, or shoot of fireworks, nothing that flies can be provided by FAU (including a trained bird). Because if it becomes untrained, or spooked by a plane taking off, that could be bad.

Re: The Red Blob

Alright, so if an owl is untrainable…. we need to go with the BLUE WAVE BLOB!!!
We will start a rivalry with Western Kentucky.  We then need to paint our field blue and challenge Boise State to beat us on it if they want us to make it green again.  ESPN will have to carry that game! Marketing at hits finest!

we are the owls yes our name comes from the burrowing owls that live on campus but we a still the fau owls two it wouldn't be that expensive we someone who trains owls to bring there trained owls to 6 home games just to have the owl fly around the stadium before each game.
