Thoughts on UAB Game

I guessed the crowd at around 15,000. It was loud and the student support (could have been better without 60,000 curse words within earshod of children and others who didn't appreciate it) was great.

The students need to be on the sideline. Mixing the GA public and students is becoming a problem. They were pretty out of control - fine for their own section, but not good among families and older folks.

I agree with you on this one.  I brought my 8 year old nephew and two of his friends with me.  All they talked about after the game was "the bad words".  I know it's college, but it was so excessive and classless.  We weren't even sitting in the student section, but it was loud and clear from our seats.  I can't see me taking him there again.

That is a shame.  I would guess that this isn't a problem unique to FAU.  I'm guessing that if you go to any college stadium in America you'll hear the same thing.  I would have suggested moving to the vistor sideline.  Obviously there are less people there, but everyone I sat around were very nice and into the game.  I'd give the experience another shot in a different location.

Re: Thoughts on UAB Game

i disagree strongly that the students need to be on the sideline…….i just think that it would cause more problems.  As it is they are suppose to be separated and people are still complaining about language and such.  I was dead in the middle of a group and yes the language was pretty bad yesterday, but yesterday was also very crazy.  Not since USF have i seen a student turnout like that.  (thanks to Abe Cohen, Mike Burdman, and others active in student gov. and the prOWLers).

Fledge……yah from what i heard the actual seats weren't that much fun…..well yall are allowed to move back over with us, i promiss the WLTOO chant doesn't happen in the student section.

As for some of the family's that came out, thank you, and if you want to come back out, you might want to think about sitting in the sideline seats….i think they are 4 dollars more, and the worst thing thats said don that side is WLTOO!  ;D

Re: Thoughts on UAB Game

I have had the same seats on the visitors sidelines since day one and you can't hear the cursing so if you are bringing kids sit over on that side.  That being said I have always said the student section should be the west  end of the visitors side until we fill up the stadium so I am glad to hear they will be moved for the Troy game just don't bring the little ones.

GO OWLS!

Re: Thoughts on UAB Game

I brought my 4 year old and sat in section 105 on the sidelines… we had a great time with a lot of other families and heard no bad words except the occasional loose one here or there, not a problem coz they were drowned out by the rest of the crowd. The students should be on the sideline next to the visitors opposite the donor/faculty side…

All in all it was a great game… packed in our section before the half then emptied considerably after halftime… all the losers left early lol gave us some space to bang the seats to the D - FENCE chant… worked like a charm for the last 10mins of the game… coach even spoke out to our section as we were leaving… awesome

No, I said I enjoyed my seats.  Let them chant WLTOO all they want, at least they cheer.

Re: Thoughts on UAB Game

I sit on the main sideline with the rest of the "lifetime" season ticket holders.  Section 105.  I hope some people from the administration are reading this.  We are there to actually watch and enjoy the game.  There is one alumnus (so he says) that causes a problem every single game going back to last year.  He is drunk, obnoxious, crude, and an embarrassment to FAU.  I am all for having a great time, but when you are in the minority of the entire section, it is a problem.  There are 10K empty seats that he can go to and act as moronic as he wants too.  I would guess there are 25-30 season ticket holders thinking of never returning to a game.  The rumor is this kid's mother is "important" to the university.  The university needs to get involved and move this person to another section or lose multiple ticket holders.  I love seeing all the students acting crazy and having a great time…and they should.  That is the college experience.  But when everyone in section 105 was chanting "throw him out," security continued to let him behave like a complete idiot.  I am a huge fan, have been to every game, am an alumnus, donate money to the university, and my son just started at FAU.  I was wanting to bring others to the Troy game but now feel embarrassed to do so.  Not a good situation.

Yeah, it wasn't quite 15K, but it was an impressive turnout by Lockhart standards…especially by the students1  We need that type of student showing EVERY home game.  Also, according to Ted, the students will be on the visiting sideline for the Troy game.  That'll make it look good on TV.  Hopefully we can fill the sideline and the endzone for that one.

If I remember from my game ops days, 6,500 seats are in each end zone and 3,000 seats are on each sideline. So if the endzone and home sideline were packed, that's already 10,000. And don't forget to include about 500 credentialed people in the final attendance count as well (media, players, coaches, on-field crew, etc.)

The students usually have mixed feelings about being moved. I'd be interesting to see how this works out. I remember in 2006 when a very involved student came up to me and said "I'm taking my 300 fraternity brothers and the rest of Greek Life out of this game if you don't move us back to the endzone."

Like I could do something about it……LOL. But I loved his fiery passion.

This unfortunately isn't a problem that is unique to FAU. It's uncalled for an inappropriate, but I don't know what can be done about it.

Re: Thoughts on UAB Game

I made the Texas game (and I'll go to Michigan State), but I wasn't at Lockhart for UAB and cannot judge crowd behavior there. However, I believe NCAA policy does deal with crowd behavior at sanctioned events. At Air Force football games and University of Denver and Colorado College hockey games, announcements are made before games reminding those in attendance that racist, sexist and excessive profane comments are not allowed. Good sportsmanship is encouraged. Those who disregard the guidelines usually are pointed out to officials. Ushers and, when necessary, security guards deal with childish and boorish behavior, drunkenness and so forth. This does not decrease the crowd enthusiasm and cheering for the team. Even some pro teams (Los Angeles Dodgers for one) will evict disorderly drunks and obscenity-spewing boors who are annoying other patrons. Once outside the stadium, or in a holding cell if they are dumb enough to challenge the cops, they are pretty much free to exercise their limited vocabularies, etc. Of course, some other pro teams (Oakland Raiders, for one) let a lot go, or at least they did last time I attended a game there. Call me old if you wish. But I have resented (and reported) such immature and offensive behavior ever since I began taking my young son to sports events many, many years ago. Some kiddos whose vocabularies show a range of obscenities (but little else) occasionally threaten me physically (though I am old enough to be their father or grandfather), but no one has actually assaulted me yet. This probably is a good thing, because I would insist on prosecution and they could learn the difficult lesson about how a felony conviction affects employment opportunities for a number of years.

Re: Thoughts on UAB Game

I have been coming to the FAU football games for the past 5 years. At my first game I was completely disappointed in only the students standing and cheering during the game. I have been to several different football games all over the country, in schools 10 times bigger than FAU and schools smaller than FAU. Their fans have more team spirit and heart than you are claiming to have. At these games, people from 2-92 are on their feet for the whole game from kick off until the last second of the game, cheering on their offense and pumping up their defense. As an alumni of this school, it is freshing to see more of the alumni and sounding communities, getting involved and cheering. I feel if someone wants to stand for the whole game, let them. Everyone in that stadium has paid for their seat and they can stand or sit, as long as their are in their assigned spot. I witnessed this event you are speaking of from above and felt if you were having a problem you should move, this guy is acting like a true fan of cheering on his team. If you attended any of the away games or even the bowl game, everyone was on their feet from beginning to end. This is how it should be at home, especially since it's OUR FIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!
