Football Practice Report 8/12
Aug. 12, 2006
Saturday was the first day of three-a-day practices for the Florida Atlantic University football team. The Owls had two sessions under their belts before a full pads practice in the afternoon allowed the team its second chance at full contact this preseason.
The coaching staff took a look at the special teams for the first time on Saturday. After doing group drills, the punt and punt return teams worked out before the no. 1 offense and no. 1 defense squared off in a simulated scrimmage.
Sean Clayton worked under center with the no. 1 offense. The junior's favorite target was Aaron Sanchez coming out of the backfield. The two hooked up twice for a gain of 20 yards. B.J. Manley also looked strong as he picked up two first downs. The defense stepped up to run the offense off the field as they sacked Clayton to allow the no. 2 offense to take over with Rusty Smith in charge.
In the no-huddle offense, Smith found Cortez Gent 10-yards down the field on the first play. An impressive run by freshman running back Willie Floyd, and an acrobatic catch by sophomore Conshario Johnson down the left side, were highlights from the underclassmen.
Sunday's practice schedule will return to normal with one practice at 3:30 p.m. The team continues its preparation for its first scrimmage of the season on Tuesday. The scrimmage will start at 3:30 p.m. at the Tom Oxley Athletic Center and is open to the public.
