Steve Walsh of St. Paul played four seasons at the University of Miami, where he became an All-America quarterback, then went on to an 11-year NFL career. Walsh, who resides in West Palm Beach, Fla., currently does a Hurricanes postgame radio show.
So when he heard the Gophers this week plan to turn up the heat in their indoor facility to simulate steamy conditions to prepare for Saturday afternoon's football game against Florida Atlantic at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Walsh had some advice.
"Save the energy; save the taxpayers' money," he said. "(Heating the indoor facility) isn't going to do anything. The biggest thing is to make sure everybody is hydrated. Just make sure they are drinking their water."
Walsh said south Florida has been "ungodly warm" and that "could be a factor" for Minnesota in Saturday's game. The forecast high is 89 degrees.
"It's going to be very hot," he said.
He also said Miami coach Randy Shannon requires his players during two-a-day workouts to go to class with a water bottle and to drink a certain amount of Gatorade and water.
The well-spoken Walsh is in his first year as a Hurricanes analyst. For the previous six years, he was analyst for Florida Atlantic, which is coached by Howard Schnellenberger who, incidentally, tried to recruit Walsh out of Cretin High when Schnellenberger was at Louisville.
"Florida Atlantic and Troy are expected to contend for the Sun Belt Conference championship," Walsh said. "Florida Atlantic has a good defense, but it's undersized, and Minnesota has a chance of leaning on them.
"And Schnellenger (age 73) is still sharp."
Walsh, 40, works for Countrywide in mortgage banking.

Does anyone have Ted Hutton's email address? We have discussed the Uniform issue here, but it needs to be addressed to someone that can do something about it. Meaning, since none of really have access to the Coach, & Ted does, we can ask Ted, to address this to the coach for us.
Stop thinking "our buddy Teddy" can get anything accomplished for FAU football. If you have questions or suggestions for coach, why not try going directly to the source. Schnelly has an email address and a phone number at the Oxley. Or better yet, go to the coach's breakfast on Friday morning and talk to him IN PERSON!!
Ted Hutton and Marcus Nelson are sports writers for newspapers. They shouldn't be asked to campaign for our issues.

Well, now that you have put it that way, I think I will take off work tomorrow, & fly down to the breakfast & ask him myself. Also, you might want to stop wearing your ass for a hat. It's not becoming.
Actually, your reply made me laugh, because it seems as though I had left a steaming pile, in your corn flakes. Glad I could help. Now, go take your blood pressure meds.

Did you miss my entire point? If you don't want to join us for breakfast, why not email Coach and make your suggestion? Are you a booster or season-ticket holder? The athletic department is always ready to listen to people who donate money to the program. I assume you know how to use a phone? But then again I probably shouldn't make any assumptions. I'm just saying we shouldn't leave it up to "Our Buddy" to get things done for the football team. He is there to report what happens, not influence what happens.
The blood pressure meds comment did make me laugh though, especially coming from someone your age. And I eat Wheaties for breakfast, not Corn Flakes thank you very much.
