VERY Early Preview of Motor City Bowl ESPN

Reminds me of an early write for the NO bowl last year when Memphis was favored…. ::)

Yeah, but this CMU team I think would beat Memphis as bad as we did. Like someone else said we are mirror images of each other

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Dont put too much stock in Graham Watson..

Oh we don't… don't worry!  :P

Graham is bad….but ESPN generally is too.

They call us FIU all the time….I mean sure its one letter difference but one is the NCAA record setting bowl team with Howard Schnellenberger, the other was the worst team in the country for 2 years straight.  Harumph.

Imagine if CMU was constantly called EMU or WMU (does this happen?) during games.

Motor City Bowl: Central Michigan (8-4) vs. Florida Atlantic (6-6)

December 7, 2008 9:27 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Graham Watson

The Chippewas ended the season in an unfamiliar place – out of the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. For the first time since 2005, the Chippewas did not get an extra game, but it is still playing in the Motor City Bowl where it won a year ago.

The Chippewas are coming into the Motor City Bowl on a two-game losing streak, their longest losing streak since September of last season, and the Chippewas have only defeated one BCS team since 1992 (37-34 against Indiana on Nov. 1).

Quarterback Dan LeFevour is one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. He's been hampered by ankle injuries this season, but he's still ranked 11th nationally in total offense with 306.7 yards per game. Although LeFevour can scramble, the passing game has been Central Michigan's best weapon.

But beware of the Owls. Florida Atlantic won five of its last six to work its way into a bowl. It's one of the hottest at-large teams and one of the most offensively potent. Quarterback Rusty Smith, who started the season slowly, threw for 389 yards and five touchdowns in his last game against Florida International.

The Owls' defense isn't great against the pass. It's allowing 219.08 yards per game, which might be the factor that tips the scales for the Chippewas.

Umm…CMU was 2nd to last in all of I-A in passing yards allowed per game.  So if our D isn't great against the pass, their's is awful.  Rusty should have a field day, but our D better be ready to play.  Everything points to a shootout here…so of course it's going to be a defensive struggle!  ;D

Re: VERY Early Preview of Motor City Bowl ESPN

I hate when writers write bowl previews like this crap:

"33. Motor City Bowl, Central Michigan (8-4) vs. Florida Atlantic (6-6), Dec. 26: This is Central Michigan's third consecutive appearance in this game. Excuse the Chippewas if they can't get too excited about the venue or the opponent."

Statistically, CMU should win. The way our DB's have been playing doesnt look very promising. I dont think our Defense can allow another 50 points and we come out with a win.

Statistically, the two teams are actually pretty even.

Points per game:
CMU: 30.3
FAU: 25.2

Yards per game:
CMU: 427.1
FAU: 391.5

Points Allowed:
CMU: 30.8
FAU: 29.3

Yards allowed per game:
CMU: 424.3
FAU: 402.2

They'll be favored, but I think this is a pretty good matchup for us.  It should be a fun game to watch.  Hopefully Schnelly comes up with a way to keep his Bowl record perfect!

Actually, the Detroit reporter's jab the Lions by saying that CMU wins more games a year at Ford Field than do the Lions.
