What went wrong this year?

Post

I must admit that this year was one of the biggest drop-offs from a team with almost all players coming back.  It’s like our season was a bad movie sequel and it unfolded quickly, the very first play of the year at OU was a omen on how everything would go for the rest of the season.  Even though we lost a lot of coaches & coordinators we should’ve been at least 8-4 or 7-5 the least, but the letdowns at crucial moments really hurt us.  The key was Briles, his father’s offense to a degree changed college football and Briles was here on a discount. His ambitions are low though, staying as an O coordinator for Houston when he can possibly get into a Power 5 school is odd but his name must still be in the doghouse.  Tbh we didn’t deserve playing in a bowl with the type of undisciplined play that was going on, I like us being undefeated in all bowls that we have gone too because it shows consistency in post season play.  Pecorraro did not utilize our talent and skillset and it showed against UCF and OU.  It was pititful flying to OU and seeing us get gashed like that it probably sucked the life out of our team. Idk if Weiss was calling the plays, but the screens were off. The designs and implementations were shoddy. The jet sweeps with Willie wright and the up the middle runs for motor were predictable and to me just not effective.  We had Harrison Bryant and we under utilized him the whole season, and Durante had moments and tried his best to shine, unfortunately Willie wright just disappeared which could be the change in scheme.  I still think De’andre should’ve played the entire year or got more touches.  The FIU game was all him and once he got it going motor got going and the numbers were gaudy like last year.  I like Robison but he needs to be coached up more and make smart decisions, some throws were just out of sync and not timed correctly.  Essentially his mistakes costed us some games because of our defense not getting stops.  I think next year with game experience both Qb’s will be in a better place, and willing to step up to do better.  Another note is the fake injuries I love the game but the Charlotte game was a total mockery of athletes who really do get hurt on the field.  It did mess up our rhythm and it equates into a non official timeout, thus more chances to change a play call or adjust.  It was terrible, and I believe this is something that is infecting college football as a whole.  We know a few things going into next year and that is Kiffin isn’t going anywhere, he needs to dig deep to prove he can win.  We are in a better place with him and after this season we can only rise, we didn’t hit rock bottom yet.  We need consistency and we need to get into a better conference, what’s the point of winning the C-USA to play in the Boca Raton Bowl every year.  We are just late bloomers unfortunately; UCF is next in line to get into a Power 5 conference because of their dominance in the American and past BCS win coupled with location and large enrollment.  We need better scheduling; better facilities and we need our fan base to grow if we want to be taken seriously.  Our stadium is one of the most unique and cool looking stadiums in college football and we cant get people to come to games.  We need more incentives for people to show up to games, notice this year there were no bubbleheads or any cool promotions to make the games more worthwhile.  We need a home and away with a power 5 like now, how can FIU pull off Big 10 and ACC schools playing in their small stadium and we can’t?   We need to find an identity, for example where do we want to be in 5 years?  What is our goal, is it to be a mid major team that is always talked about  like a Boise or a team that gets into a Power 5?  What do you guys think about the overall season and our purpose or goal for the future?

For real though. You guys know how much I lobe the Owls and I kinda shrugged my shoulders this year.

I think we simply undervalued some players on the oline, QB and WR, had 5 new coaches, the schedule was tougher, and we could not kick.

I think Lane will figure it out.

As for big picture conference stuff stop worrying because we are not going anywhere soon for so many reason in our control and out of our control.

Just play your schedule win some games and enjoy tailgating and going to games.

I'm a firm believer that the sky is the limit as far as moving up conferences. We have the best location in the country in my opinion. All we need is just to get to that darn AAC. Then the playoff will expand and it won't be crazy to think that one day we can be in the playoff conversation if everything goes right one year. I do think eventually we could maybe get into the P5. But that would be after a lengthy run in the AAC. As far as on the field, there's no distance you can run and be safe from horribly inadequate offensive line play. There are players that you just don't take on that we did. Losing Taleni and Nagel ruined our DL. I believe that the locker room was out of control, with players believing every newsclipping written about them. All I read in interviews was "now I'm going to show the world what I can do", and "I'm not the player they thought I was at my previous stop", instead of, "I'm glad to help the team out". That's all fine and dandy if you have the O Line and D line we had in 2017, but when you have me first guys that stink anyways, you're going to find yourself in a rut.

Before FAU would ever be considered for a P5 conference it would have to move up from a tier 2 university. Then who knows?

We not going AAC or P5 anytime soon and I mean decades.

Lets go over the reasons why.
First what we can control

We play in a high school basketball arena, we get in about 12k-15k but in the seats for football games and have around from what I have heard under 500 memebers of the OSF club.

College football attendance is dropping everywhere ( even the blue bloods are having trouble some weekends) while we are trying to grow and it's becoming a really uphill battle.

Now reasons we can not control.

The TV bubble has popped and there is nothing we can do. In 2012 when everyone was running around trying to grab mebers everyone was under the assumtion that if they brought team ''XYZ'' with thier market TV money would increase.

Well that did not happen. C-USA grabbed FIU and FAU for thier TV markets and C-USA TV deal shrunk a great deal after 2017. We were basically worthless to C-USA and it's money. We play games on facebook with 2-3k people streaming it.

Schools like Cincy and UCF who both have large fan bases great markets and history can not even get into the big 12 becuase schools like Texas and OU do not want to share.

Think of it this way if you have BBQ and you bought 10lbs of steak and that is all you have to share why would you invite the guys who brings chips and dip if that means you have to split your steak two ways more?

Each Big 10 schools gets 51 million in TV revenue yearly ….yea Rutgers gets almost twice FAU's entire athletic budget from TV alone. I mean let that sink in. You think OSU and Michigan like sharing that money with them?

Since schools like that can not even get an invite we are not going to AAC and lets say we do get an invite to the AAC it's becuase they lost some top schools which means we will be going to a watered down version anyways.

Now UCF is brining a lot of attention to how unfair the system is, so if they expand the playoff that might bring some more vaule to the lowers leauges, but I do not know.
The P5 Cartel has too much power and has 0.0 inrest in letting the little guys grow and start taking thier share of the pie.

Aside: Rutgers and Maryland do not get the same money the other B10 schools do, which is another reason why moving up is not all it’s perked up to be. I just wish more of our games were on ESPN.

Mac games get on tv, lots of them.
