By "real football" you mean soccer, correct?

I think the point the writer wanted to make was that FIU's attendance numbers were down last season, which is clearly inaccurate. Let's presume that FIU fudged the numbers, are you saying then that they only fudged it for last season? If you don't believe this past season's number then I don't expect you to believe any past season numbers from FIU.
However, you cannot deny that FIU had a extremely strong turnout for the UCF game (someone here claimed it was all UCF fans) and our homecoming game against Duke (all Duke fans too, but that should be impossible since UCF bought all of our season tickets!). Any way you spin it, we had more tickets sold and more butts in the seat than previous seasons.
Exhibit A: Homecoming vs Duke (I swear I did not photoshop it!)
Would like to see this shot halfway through the game, not 5 minutes before kickoff. But once again, congrats on selling out the soccer stadium for homecoming.
Oops! I'm sorry 'Delt, didn't realize that butts in seat don't count until after the half time show.
And thanks 'Delt, we hope to sell out more than just two games from this season onwards. Also hosting those Gold Cup soccer games at FIU adds a nice chunk of charge to the athletic department's coffers. It is kinda nice to have a stadium that can pay for itself instead of being an anchor around our necks.
Anyway, I also hope you guys pack that beauty this season as well, I haven't been inside it yet but it looks like it could get real loud on a Saturday.

Isn't that the same Gold Cup from a couple years ago that America choked in? Giving Mexico the bid to the Confederations Cup in 2013? Wow, as if I needed more proof of FIU being un-American.
But if we're talking about other events at the stadium, we had a national televised all-star game, a sold out church service, a sold out concert, and still had a higher student turnout to our games even though we were terriable and played smaller teams then y'all. But on a side note, I love the churros FIU Stadium had! When's it going to be taco appreciation night?

Re: Why you shouldnt commit suicide because FIU got into CUSA...
As a fan, and only as a fan, I'd rather take an FCS team that's won multiple championships and played in bowl games… like Appalachian State. That tells me with FBS recruits they could really become contenders. They have a strong winning tradition, they've built a fanbase, they swoop into the conference like a boss.
I don't think we need another Northeast Texas State (fictional, don't Google it) that's been 10-50 over the last 5 years because ohmygod, they're in Texas, we better get on that media market. You know? What's the purpose of the media market if nobody's watching? When FIU was 0-12 or 1-11, what was the viewership like, despite being in Miami?
What's really going to happen is a team like Northeast Texas State is going to come in, take years to get the right FBS recruits in place and then STILL get squashed 51-3 by a school like Nebraska on National TV just like the rest of us; everyone out there in TV land will summarize it as, "yet another example of why the SBC is pathetic and let's cut away from the game while it's in progress to show you an interesting Cornhusker snuggie this fan made for her dog."
Then we'll have them at home here at FAU, and the casual FAU fan - and let's be honest, nearly everybody is a casual FAU fan right now besides us - is going to look at the home schedule and go, "Oh we're playing Northern Texas something or other" "Who?" "Exactly." and not show up.
Can you build a fanbase by constantly beating nobodies? Sure, slowly. Look at Troy. They've built a fanbase over the years by running the table in the SBC, although none of us were ever nationally ranked, and sometimes weren't even threats in our own conference.
But I hope for more than that. I hope FAU can schedule home-and-home with attractive opponents (a Virginia vs a Maryland, for instance) and then pull the upset.
Bowls or not, TV or not, football records or not, CUSA teams have managed to get national rankings, and this means teams like FIU can use conference games to bolster their national stature. More opportunity for success. What we have to hope for now is that with the recent hiring flurry of pedigree coaches in the SBC, these teams will have new vigor and get talent they couldn't previously have, leading to upsets, leading to rankings, leading to the SBC overall moving up in the pile.
Sorry if that came out like a mess. I'm tired.

Yup
That WAS true before most of the conferences best teams left. Do you think even the best teams left (ECU and USM) are going to get ranked or bolster thier stature beating teams like Charlotte, ODU, and UTSA? Hell, SBC teams have been beating UNT and FIU for years…what has that gotten the rest of the SBC? I know we are all upset that FIU got an invite and we didn't, but we need to stop thinking of CUSA as how it used to be. The drop off between what they lost and what they added is HUGE…it's far, far greater then the drop off the SBC will be experiencing.
