Wrapup

Well, it was almost a contest in the first half.  You managed to scare our young secondary, and I think Smith had something like 225 yards passing in the first half alone.  Some critical mistakes really hurt you, but at the same time, good teams force mistakes, so I think we had a little bit to do with it.

This was the best we've played in our opener in several years.  I think you got our best game.  For sure you got McCoy's best game.  He looked awfully good tonight.

I've seen a few posts from a Texas fan on this board that displayed a pronounced lack of class.  I hope it's because he's a young kid and doesn't know any better.  You do not deserve to be subjected to that kind of abuse.

There's a lesson in all of this.  You may not want to hear it, but here it is.  One good season, capped by one good victory in a bowl game, doesn't necessarily mean you've arrived.  But remember this as well.  One blowout defeat doesn't necessarily mean you're gone.

I'm heading off to the Hornfans board to celebrate our victory, but I just wanted to say good luck in the rest of your season, and we'll see you in 2010.

You make a good point here.  There was an incredible amount of hype coming into this season – a couple of press clips even called us potential BCS busters.  All because we went 8-5 and had 18 starters coming back.

The thing the media doesn't bother to check is how we got to 8-5.  There were quite a few close games in there that we pulled out – a couple of them against teams that shouldn't have kept it so close.  When you break it all down, if those close games had gone the other way, we could have just as easily been 4-8 and there would have been no talk, no hype, no smack from Coach – just more "advanced training" as he calls it, starting with the obligatory season-opening beatdown in Austin.

But I'm sure the team started reading the press and got it into their heads that they were just that good.  Coach stoked the fire, and you know the rest.  I just hope this doesn't infect the rest of the season, but given what I saw tonight, I'm not so optimistic.  How they react to this will show us the answer, but whatever they do, it will be with the realization that they aren't anywhere near ready to hang with the best.

Re: Wrapup

everyone has said all that needs to be said about our weak D against a good Texas O and a few crucial mistakes early that certainly helped take the wind out of our sails. The fact that Tex could score at will put this game out of reach quick. Our team has proven time and again that it can't battle back against these big boys, if we don't get some points on the board early and often, they're beaten. See: Okie State last year.

I will say that save for 2 people in the entire city, I have had a blast here. I know you all pride yourselves on your politeness and welcoming demeanor to visiting teams and I've felt it all. Everyone has been very friendly, hell, even your student section (that the FAU fans got to interact with all game) was good. I've been to places where we'd have been pelted with bottles during our drubbing. Funny story: as we walked down San Jacinto toward the stadium a man in a car turning in front of us said out the window "Welcome to Austin" and one of the guys I was with quickly responded with "screw you buddy." We all looked back at our bud and were like, you know that guy just said something nice to us right? He said he's so use to the abuse from being a visiting fan that it was a kneejerk reaction, he didn't know what to do!

Love the jumbotron, I watched more of the game on that thing than the live version. Colt looks like he won't be having a repeat of last year, he was very good.

Finally, you make a great point above, we have not arrived and I hope this beating brings the team and a number of our fans back to reality.

I could not agree with you more, I think a lot of people need to come back down to earth around here and realize this very fact.

I would not be surprised, at all, if we had a down year.

Like things, love people.

Re: Wrapup

Come on fledge, losing to Texas the same way we lost to Ok St and UF last year doesnt mean we will have a bad year…if we went back to a bowl and won this year would be just as much of a success as last year, if not more.  Look at Michigan last year, they sucked but still went to a bowl and beat Florida.  We went up against a top 10 team and made mistakes, of course we lost.  We needed a perfect game and mistakes from them for it to be even close.

Re: Wrapup

Far too early to cash in our chips. There is still a lot of football left to be played and FAU can still accomplish some great things. I am as disappointed as anyone in the way the team lost, but at least we get an opponent more our caliber next week and we have a great shot to turn things around and go into Michigan State with some momentum.
