That statement about the other school being better academically is just not true. I wonder what they teach in business so different from FAU. What about the other programs? Are they that different? Even UM teaches the same stuff, so that thing about my school being better than yours is so overrated. All schools within the state might follow the same classes to fulfill the requirements. The difference sometimes is made by the professors or even the students.
Ideally, you want your school to admit students with the highest numbers, have high retention rates, retain well-known faculty at great salaries and produce a lot of research. For instance, Harvard is held in such high regard because they do billions of dollars worth of research and employ Nobel laureates teaching students who were previously in the top 1% of their graduating high school class.
On paper FIU is impressive: moderate to high freshman GPA/SAT, a handful of ranked programs, medical and law schools, etc. They've been focusing on increasing their academic presence while we've been dragged through ugly public arguments regarding how poorly we pay our faculty.
If we want to be taken more seriously as an university and crawl out of this Tier 4 pit, it's imperative that our next President focus on boosting faculty numbers and expanding programs. Moreover, we'll need to increase the number of Ph.D. degrees we offer. That goes hand in hand with increasing faculty numbers, of course, since a particular professor can only reasonably mentor less than a handful of Ph.D. students.
One sign that we're moving up academically will be the creation of new solitary colleges (i.e. College of Biomedical Engineering) from 'combination' colleges (i.e. College of Engineering, Math and Computer Science) and then subsequently dedicate entire buildings to the new college.
It takes decades to build an academic empire. The sooner we start, the better off we are.

I love seeing the FL schools take advantage of that ridiculous talent pool.
I've only met cool folks from FAU or FIU.

FYI: Ron Morris is a moron. He's completely incapable of writing an insightful column on any topic. His primary schtick is to simply poke and antagonize. Sometimes his logic is so far fetched and even his factual accuracy so off base that many if not most Gamecock fans tuned him out entirely a while back. I don't read anything he writes. He's neither intelligent enough nor wise enough for it to be worth my time in the morning before work.

This is true. I been around the country and most fans haven't heard of the schools or they get them confussed. It just going to be that way for a while.fauowl said
I think it's only lame to us. To be honest, this is how the rest of the country sees us. There's no reason why they would not see us this way. I was in Indiana recently visiting where I grew up, and there is not confusion between the 2, nobody has heard of either one so it is not too surprising to read this, for me. For the majority of the country, this is it…until we do something special to stand out, and begin to repeat it.
Do not dispair. I moved up here to Illinois the same year the football team started competing. The public knowledge of FAU has increased continuously. Most of the time when I mention FAU, people acknowledge they have heard of it. It is due 99.99% to football. I don't know about FIU since I generally don't have reason to bring them up in a discussion. After the famous orange brawl they were talked about a little and there was some confusion with FAU but that has passed since it is old news. I always use the full name instead of FAU.

I've posted this before and I'll post it again. FAU does not work as a commuter university. Especially in a community where families can afford to send their kids to private universities. Commuter colleges are in large cities, not small cities. FIU is in the center of a much much larger population. Many more high schools to draw from. The commuter school works well in larger, denser populations. It has worked well for FIU.owlcountry said

I don't believe FAU was intended originally to be a commuter college. 1) there was no I95 in south Florida or along side the campus making commuting from long distances impractical. 2) the population of Boca Raton when it was decided to build it there was less than 10,000 people. There wasn't much of a population to draw from locally and no I95 meant tough commuting from North PPC and Southern Broward and Northern Dade. 3) dorms were finished shortly after the school opened and continued to be built until 1969. At that time the dorms housed > 20% of the enrollment. About 20 years passed before another dorm was built. I think the inclusion of I95 and so close to the campus is when the powers that be decided to make FAU a commuter campus.
When FAU finishes the transition BACK to a traditional university, things will change even more than they already have.

I enjoyed interacting with some on the board but never got the chance to meet up with any owls at the game. I guess they were burrowed in somewhere. (I am sure that is an old one).
Take care and good luck with the rest of your season.
