I think it's a really bad idea. They're holding an event which is basically like, "Come out and meet our players" (and all the usuals, meaning DT, Cheerleaders, and Owsley, in case you haven't done this a billion times before) on a Sunday (as opposed to, say, a Monday).

I'm sure there's a reason for this but I think the only students who will be there are the residential students, and even among them, it will probably only be the diehards (prOWLers, Rowdy Rexes).

But as smittyisahoot said, the budget's tight (especially when you're hiring outside consultants) and they're probably throwing this together somewhat last minute. Have to work with what you have, I guess. Maybe my vision of a Basketball "Bash" is different than theirs. I know that the first home game for Women's Basketball is before the Men's home game, so you can't have this on the first day of Men's basketball leading right into the game…

Re: "Basketball Bash"

I think a lot of the plans for the Bash have been thrown off due to construction.  I'll give them a pass this year because of it.  I don't have a huge problem with it being on a Sunday, although everyone would probably prefer a midnight madness type event on the first night of practice.

Will you put a link of the article up?  I have no idea what we are talking about.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Doesn't an "interactive kid's area" = big $$$ spent on inflatable playhouses and so forth when this is supposed to be about college students? I know they're trying to get the community involved but there are a hundred other things I'd like to see before they spend $$$ on kids who don't even care about FAU.

Dexter LaMont is big on that. He's coming from FSU where Tallahassee is proud of the Noles. He wants to inspire that same pride here in Boca. I don't fault him for that, and it's a difficult undertaking given Boca's fickle elderly population, but I think it could work. Before the FAU/USF game, I was making errands around Boca with an FAu shirt on and everywhere I went someone made a good comment about it, whether it was "Alright FAU!", "Go Owls!" or "We're going to win today!" And I saw people all over (Publix, etc) wearing FAU gear. It can happen for Boca but we need some time. A win over USF (or, as unlikely as it seems, a win over UF) would have helped a lot in that regard. The stadium is going in on 2010. By 2030 the stadium will have provided twenty years of entertainment and pride to Boca, Boca high schoolers will have spent nights watching FAU football, and things in the town will change. Slowly but surely.

Re: "Basketball Bash"

Inspire home town pride. That's fine and good.

But don't focus just on Boca. There are dozens of cities nearby that could take pride in FAU sports - the whole county, as a matter of fact. Why alienate Delray, Deerfield, Boynton, Wellington, West Palm, Royal Palm, Jupiter, etc.? These places are a half-hour or less away.

Boca is not a city surrounded by open lands for miles.

Sounds like the basketball bash is a modified version of Midnight Mayhem
