Team Notes
Hawaii
UH returns four letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 28-6 overall and captured both the Big West regular-season and tournament championships. The team’s lone returning starter from last year, senior forward Mike Thomas (7.9 ppg, 5.6 rpg), will redshirt the 2016-17 season after undergoing off-season wrist surgery. With Thomas reshirting this year, UH returns a total production of just 66 points, 41 rebounds, and 22 assists from last year’s team. Returning sophomore Sheriff Drammeh saw the most significant action last season averaging 13.4 minutes off the bench while starting two contests. After sitting out the 2015-16 season, Auburn transfer Jack Purchase will make his debut for the Rainbow Warriors this year. The 6-8 forward appeared in nine games for Auburn in the fall of 2014, before transferring to UH.
Florida Atlantic
The Owls will have a much different look in 2016-17. In addition to an expected faster pace of play, FAU will have eight new players on the court to start the year, with a ninth, Brown transfer Justin Massey, joining the active roster after the fall semester. FAU does return four starters from last season. The Owls also return nearly 60 percent of last year’s scoring and 63 percent of last year’s rebounding. Ronald Delph led the team in both categories (10.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg). Oklahoma transfer Frank Booker is eligible this season after sitting out last year. He adds depth and experience to a FAU backcourt that lost three players from last season. Marcus Neely will join the Owls on the court after sitting out last season. He appeared in 49 games over the course of two seasons at UNC-Asheville. Rebounding is expected to improve with the addition of 6-10 forward William Pfister, who won a NJCAA national championship at Northwest Florida State College.
SIU Edwardsville
SIUE Head Coach Jon Harris is beginning is second season at the helm. The Edwardsville, Illinois, native led the Cougars to a 6-22 record in his first season as a head coach. The Cougars won three Ohio Valley Conference games and a team best three Division I nonconference games in 2015-16. SIUE earned first-time wins over SIU Carbondale and on the road at Eastern Illinois. Leading scorers Burak Eslik (14.0 points per game) and Carlos Anderson (10.3 ppg) return for SIUE. Anderson also was second on the team with 4.7 rebounds per game. SIUE is meeting a pair of first-time opponents in this tournament. The Cougars have never faced Hawaii or Texas State. Florida Atlantic defeated SIUE 94-89, Feb. 26, 1990 when both schools were members of NCAA Division II.
Texas State
The Bobcats are 60-35 all-time in season openers with a 2-1 mark under Head Coach Danny Kaspar. Over the past 10 years, Texas State is 10-1 with the lone loss being to Houston to open the 2013-14 season. The Bobcats return six players from the 2015-16 season, five of which saw action in 15 or more games. Back to run the point is Ojai Black. The senior finished last season averaging 7.2 points, 3.9 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game. Over the last eight games of the season, the Killeen, Texas native dished out 6.1 apg with a career-high 12 coming against Troy (Mar. 3). Along with Black, Kavin Gilder-Tilbury is the only other starter returning for Texas State. Gilder-Tilbury leads all returners in scoring (12.3) and rebounding (4.0). He and Black were the only two Bobcats to start every game in 2015-16.

Still a six point game, FAU needs to start thinking about a run right-about-now.
