Doherty: Ouch!

Doherty was a short timer anyway and Angelos made it clear he would do it all over again, which speaks volume. As much as we don't like the way he left, my take on this is, he did bring that much need catalyst for change this program needed and this program will benefit in the long run because of Doherty even with his one year sting. Rex would never have gotten a chance to coach the Owls if it wasn't for Doherty and T-Rex has showned that he will grow with this team and will be here a long time (IMO).

There are many other benefits that we will inherit because of Doherty being here, yet he won't benefit from any of it, T-Rex & FAU will (sounds fimilar) - he was put in a position to make a tough decision and made the right one for himself & FAU.

Because we have T-Rex at the helms!!

I thought we were looking at Rex before Doherty even entered the picture?

I would also like to add, that yes we all knew Doherty was going to have a short stay, However; it still does not excuse the way in which he showed us all a classless departure. A matter of fact I would not be surprised if him and Saban were drinking buddies…Zinfedel that is.

Rex wanted the FAU job, Doherty was a reference for him. FAU wouldn't take Rexy because he hadn't had any Head coaching experience, thats when he asked Doh to apply and they became a package deal almost.

Will somebody inform me why Doherty's depature was classless. The only coach I have seen make a classless depature was his predecessor Sidney Green.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

I agree, walty. Doherty advanced this program probably 5 years in one year. He helped our program and he helped himself. Win. Win. We do not have the money to pay a coach at that level. He left because someone offered him 3 times the money…and considering the cost of living in Boca, he got about 4 times the money. He was making $175k. That is not that much when you live in Boca and are used to making much more. All of us would have done the same thing. He has never bad-mouthed FAU. He is lightyears ahead of Sidney Green. They should not even be mentioned in the same thread. Rex is now a great fit for the program. He has learned from other great coaches. This is his first head coaching position and our budget meets that type of experience.

I don't know the details of Green's departure. it would be interesting to know.

I only hope as the athletic dept grows, so does the budget. I would like to keep Walters he for a while. We all know, as he continues to win and develop players, bigger wealthier colleges will be looking.

Green was fired. I don't know if there were hidden reasons for that. The obvious reason that all could see was that he created under-acheivers. His last year, we played at Miami. I went to the game. It was embarrassing. Our first 8 shots were blocked setting a record for the Hurricanes. There was no energy displayed which was a direct result of the way Green coached. No passion, no energy. The next year, Doherty comes in and with the same players like Rodney Webb, FAU games became energized and exciting to watch. Doherty and Walters have the ability to make players better. Green had a kid named Mike Bell on the team his last year. He had tremendous potential and Green did nothing for him or with him. If Bell would have had one year under Doherty, we would have won the A-Sun last year.

I think Rex is by far the greatest fit for our program. He is a true winner as opposed to Doherty who is a phony and Green who, well lets just say…Couldn't even recruit his own son to play for FAU.
