FAU vs fiu

The group of students who attend every home game that call themselves "The Rowdy Rex's" brought boxes of rice with FAU stickers all over them… turns out Dre asked one of them for the box to keep… he has it on his desk in his dorm now!! The boxes of rice are AWESOME….

On the other note… this is what bothers me about the whole Bury The Burrow In Red garbage…

"Break the attendance": Anyone notice that they have not advertised ANYWHERE what the actual current record is? I know what it is… but that doesn't mean the average citizen of Boca Raton does. Also, FAU is averaging around 650 people per game… the attendance record is MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH higer than that… what makes ANYONE think we are going to break the record when the attendance this season has been so abysmal? They are setting their sights WAY too high and it's going to backfire miserably. If we were averaging 3,000 per game, setting a goal of breaking the attendance record would be realistic. What makes Marketing think we are going to jump from 650 to 3,000+ for a game against FIU?

This is a terrible marketing ploy… never would happen at a major university. This is why we are not seen as a major university… we have terrible marketing in our athletics department.

Terrible marketing? We typically have NO marketing. At least this is an attempt to make something happen. I think it's great. If you don't break a record, who cares? Let's just get a bunch a fans out so they can see what a good time they can have and hopefully some keep coming back. This IS marketing! Rex needs to open up to the media this week and get some stories out in the papers so he can talk about this big game on Saturday and get some additional free marketing out to the general public.

fauowl, I simply disagree. Marketing outside of 777 Glades Road is non-existent. Setting such an unrealistic goal is just a miniscule part of the problem. This "big marketing outreach" that they claim they are having does NOT exist outside of the confines of our university. WITHIN the university, you get in reach to students. Yes, students should show up to games, but you need locals from Palm Beach and Broward for MONEY. This marketing scheme is already a miserable failure. I'd LOVE to see a packed house, floor to balcony to 3rd level seating, but setting a goal of QUOTE breaking the attendance record END QUOTE sounds ridiculous when we average 657 fans a game - and believe me, FAU fans are not stupid, they know the average is nothing to be proud of.

If I am wrong come Sunday morning - I will admit I was gone… happily. But I doubt it will happen.

the way i see it, the average Boca resident and "semi" FAU fan is going to attend one, maybe two basketball games a season. If everyone can encourage people to attend THIS game on saturday, which has the feel that it will at least be the highest attendance this season, then those people will walk away impressed, much more so than if they went to a preseason game. Hopefully that will benefit attendance in the future. We're not going to get 4000 people in the gym from one week of internet advertising but we can set the season mark (to be broken Feb 28th when we host our first Conference Tourney game!) with a little effort from every one that goes already. hey, if all 600 average fans bring two friends… :)

I made the comment on the FAU Sports & News board that the attendance seemed to be up quite a bit for baseballs opener last Friday night. Somebody is doing something to get butts in the seats. If the baseball team continues to produce runs like they did in that series they'll draw some attention ;).
I have been meaning to get to a basketball game this season ever since Nov. I'm planning on being there Sat. thanks to the hype and I'll be one of those who pays to get in. Last years high attendance was 1348 when ETSU came to town according to the media guide. That was just 5 more than the UCF game and 10 more than Kennesaw State. The home game avg was 1112. I didn't see anything regarding the all time high. But 1348 is certainly within reach and it appears that the marketing dept. is doing what needs to be done to make it happen i.e. free admission, free food, giveaways, etc. FIU got only 506 out to the first contest. Surely FAU can beat that soundly in the stands while the Owls beat the Panthers on the court. Go Owls!

A former colleague is the sports editor of the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers (Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, Vero Beach, etc.). He said he received the pitch from the SID's office for this game.

ive posted on this previosuly more than once…it is over 4K…i told someone who works for the department to verify it after someone wrote that it was 2,800 (per Dexter)…this IS NOT the case…i asked them to pull the box score for the miami game (when i held Dir Sports Mktg title)…still waiting to hear back ;)

but respectfully, i am going to completely take the opposite stance on this…you will see 2000+ saturday night - period.

what has been lacking with this administration is the campus ties - SG, Clubs, Greeks, and Housing…i maded it my earnest to reach out to them and INVOLVE them in the program…this built roots and feeding lines for attendees…dont see much if any of that now…this is the first for this year…that is certain…they need someone who is a liason full time for part of the year to establish ties with htese groups…they are influential and move students…

on another note, our community support is way up…this is a positive.

"I hope everyone has seen the posters around campus about "burying the burrow in red." My plea to you is please do, show the nation what FAU is about, we need to think not about setting an attendence record, because the old is pathetic (no more 2,000). What we need to do is sell out the burrow to give the players the support they deserve. I'm confident that if you show up FAU will dominate FIU, who they beat earlier this year on a last second jumper by star senior DeAndre Rice. "

This is from the sports guy on the UP online blog thing. Granted these are student journalist but he could have at least tried to get the "official" attendance record. :-/

I know that Dexter met with the fraternities to try and get their support for this game, it's unfortunate that he didn't do this at the begining of the year but better late than never I suppose. From what I understand, they should all be out in full force on Saturday.

I'm looking forward to this game big time!

I'll be one of the paying attendees…love to see the marketing around our local rival. The marketing is smart that they are advertising around the FIU game…we need to be there behind the other teams bench like I used to do when I was at FAU…the best is when you get the other teams coach yelling at you!!…that and JAB979 actually had one of the opposing players ask him to stay around for a beating after a game!!
