FAU vs fiu

FIU lost to Troy by five points tonight. Troy fought back from some decent deficits to take the lead with less than 4:00 to play. FIU made only one field goal in the last 12-plus minutes.

Even if we don't break the attendance record tonight and we aleast double our season attendance for this game it would make for a nice size crowd.

Go Owls, let's make the Golden Kitties crawl back home with their tail between their legs.

FAU vs fiu

February 10, 2007
Bury the Burrow
The humble FAU Arena, which Little Big Man dubbed The Burrow last season, hosts a party that begins this afternoon and should wrap up about 8:30 tonight.

The women are up first, and I certainly hope they can win this game, because if they don?t figure on a 0-18 Sun Belt record. By winning the A-Sun last year Chancellor Dugan probably will escape with her job after this season. But if the Burrowing Birdettes struggle again next year, that could be it.

But on to the men, who are still in the middle of the Sun Belt standings and have to win tonight to keep up hopes of a home court first round conference tournament game. FIU is not very good. FAU took them down on their own floor earlier this year, and need to thump them in the Burrow tonight. A loss would be tough to stomach, especially after FAU has invited the universe to come and watch.

With games at Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee, and hosting New Orleans and South Alabama, beating the Amber Kitties is a must. FAU is 1-3 this season versus its final four opponents.

If Paul Graham has a big game, the BBs should win easily. If he doesn?t, FAU may have trouble. I do expect them to be leading at halftime. That has been one of the consistent things with this team. After that, well, you know how it has gone. Who knows????

WHAT FAU NEEDS TO DO TONIGHT
OK, let?s say 3,000 fans show up. That is at least 2,000 new fans, many probably attending their first game, and 2,000 potential future fans who just might keep coming if they have a good time.

So FAU has to put on a show. You don?t want to invite everyone to a party and then have them looking for the exits 15 minutes after walking in the door. So FAU needs to do three things.

1. WIN (see above)

First, the team must beat FIU and show they fans they are competitive in the Sun Belt. Especially with two big home games remaining against New Orleans and South Alabama.

2. DANCE TEAM A MUST

Second, the Dance Team NEEDS TO PERFORM AT HALFTIME. Ok? No more 7-year-olds doing tumbling routines for 20 minutes. WE WANT THE DANCE TEAM!!! Preferably in those white skirts, or even the Redneck-Floozy outfit, or maybe something new for the big party. Just please put them on the floor. They are good and this is a special night so they need to be out there.
And dancers, if you are also performing at the women?s game, save some energy for the nightcap. That is when you have to shine.

3. PLENTY OF FOOD, SHORT LINES

Third, HAVE ENOUGH FOOD and more places to buy it. The lone concession stand gets overwhelmed when 1,000 show up. Imagine three times that. And it won?t be good enough to just not run out of basics like hot dogs and pizza, you need to have some auxiliary places set up so fans actually have a chance to purchase something without waiting for half an hour in line. And it wouldn?t hurt to empty the garbage cans in the foyer and bathrooms a couple times during the game, since they end up overflowing with just the usual crowd on hand.

OK, just some advice based on past experiences. FAU has done a good job of targeting this game and marketing it, now they have to deliver when the fans show up.

Addendum: I trust The Rowdy Rex's will be on hand, and with their largest contingent of the season. Saw something about the boxes of rice on the fan board. Great idea. Keep that up, guys. OK, I tried this before, but let me suggest a seating change. Try this angle, since my damaged eardrums brought no sympathy. This is a TV game, and the cameras will be set up to shoot the stands behind where the teams sit. Think about it. You sit behind press row, the cameras will be over your shoulders and the backs of your heads might get on the tube. You sit behind FAU's or FIU's bench, the camers get you and your handsome, screaming faces. Just a thought….

HOW MANY??

FAU is trying to break an attendance record tonight, but there is some question over just what number they are trying to beat.
The official number being used is 2,863, which was set in the 2000 season opener vs. Miami.
FloridaOwl, who had first-hand knowledge of the situation, said there were more than 4,000 at a Miami game in November 27th 1995.
But the sports information office said it can?t confirm that. Since FAU has had trouble getting more than 1,000 at games in the five years I have covered the team, it must have taken a pretty amazing effort to get even the low number of 2,800-plus to a game.
Hoping at least 2,864 show up tonight.
(Note: FAU used to play Miami every year, but after the 2002-03 season, when FAU beat Miami74-73. Turned out to be the highlight of the season, since the BBs went 7-21 that season. I can?t remember who the Miami coach was, but I do recall him saying the game was a lose-lose for Miami, because they were expected to win it every time, and that he didn?t want to play FAU anymore. Baseball used to play the Hurricanes, too, but that game has also gone by the wayside.)

GOOD START

Softball opened its season Friday and is 2-0 after day one, and baseball knocked of Cincy to improve to 4-0. Both are in action today, with baseball at 2 p.m., softball at 6 and 8 p.m.

Later?.
