Jamal Owens Blows up...
"American 59, Carol City 53: American's Ruben Newbold made two free throws with 23 seconds remaining to clinch the title at the Miami Gardens Classic.
Newbold, who was selected to the All-Tournament Team and awarded the Most Valuable Player award, scored seven points in the last 2:30 as he led all scorers with 19 points.
''I'm really surprised I got the MVP,'' Newbold said. ``We all did a good job tonight.''
The Patriots (11-4) trailed the entire first half, down by as many as 11 points before cutting the deficit to just two points by halftime.
The Patriots were sub-500 from the free-throw line and early in the game it looked like that might be their downfall.
But, Newbold's clutch shooting at the end, coupled with William Harris' late basket and steal, was all they would need to beat the Chiefs for the second time this season.
Jamal Owens did his best to avenge the previous loss to the Patriots in overtime as he posted a double-double with 16 points and 21 rebounds. The Chiefs (10-5) had four players score in double figures.
Harris chipped in 18 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Patriots.
''We have faced them twice now and will see them again on Tuesday, and we know it will be a battle again,'' said Patriots coach Gaston Rodriguez. "Hopefully we'll finally get the respect we deserve.'
Also selected to the All Tournament Team were Carol City's Kendall Despagne and Reginald Owens, Cooper City's Ryan Grubbs, Chaminade's Zack Bailey and North Miami's Dywon Campbell." - Miami Herald
