Live from Denver...

I don't get it. Denver scored way over their avg. They were sinking 3s one after the other for a while. Is defense a problem on this team?

One step forward, two steps back. Do we really have better players? I seems to me we do but are they better or are we just more familiar with our players? I don't get why we cannot separate ourselves from the pack when we have a realistic opportunity. If we really do have better players and we are still losing then that is a coaching issue.

Rex Walters 2 technicals. Ejected.

Im not dogging anyone…but i am going to say that the three tech's in all likelihood were a factor in this game…thats six points they (Denver) should not have made…

We HAVE to start playing defense…its getting rediculous…

Offensivley we are very talented…but our defense is at best compred to that of Swiss Cheese…

Denver is not a good basketball team offensively…

Hopefully we will rebound from this loss, and get a "W" in Denton tommorow night…

Regardless, emotional outburts are not needed…we need to stop "giving" points away…no matter what the refs do or dont do…how many calls do we ever see overturned??

Rebounding is also a factor that has to change…

Rex needs to line those boys up at the free throw line and teach them how to make free throws. This is the 3rd game this season we have blown due to bad free throw shooting. 50% again as a team, NEVER gonna get it done with that garbage no matter if our players are better than theirs or not. Free throws are a fundamental part of the game, especially on a team like ours where we play a majority of guards. How can you shoot 50% from the line when you are 6'2 and play D-I bball??

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Actually, we had 4 techs (2 on Rex, 1 each on Balado and Monroe) plus an intentional foul. That's 10 free throws!

They do need to work on their free throws and they need to get stronger defensively. Opponents are scoring way over their per game avg against FAU. Look at So Alabama. 101 points. FAU is scoring a lot of points too but the team that scores the most during the game wins. FAU scored 85 points last night. For a college team, thats good. Unfortunatley DU scored 90. That is 24 points higher than their per game avg this season. One of the guys on DU scored something like 20 points and his season avg is like 6.

90 points is the most DU has scored all season. The previous high was 79. 85 points was the second highest scored against them all season. 85 points should have won with a good margin. The points from technicals shouldn't have mattered.

From my vantage point (at the game w/ five other alums), the four techs were a big factor. The early ejection of the coach set a tone. For my money, he (and the team) got hosed on any number of calls.

After the game, on the Denver radio station, the DU coach was crowing about how he handled the referees better than Walters did. The DU coach, who sounded as if he were smirking, said he recognized the ref crew from working some big Div. 1A games and figured any – any – challenge to them would bring on the calls against. So, he said, he instructed his players to keep their mouths shut, no matter how much they objected to a call. Walters, he and the DU announcers pointed out almost gleefully, did not.

Other problems have been outlined above. In addition, the Owls had a problem with shooting when nothing but white shirts (DU) were in rebounding positions – sometimes four DU players under the basket with no blue shirt even close. These factors, allowing too many uncontested long twos and threes, too many errant passes, too many bad fouls and some lethargic play in the first portion of the second half spelled doom.

Nonetheless, it was a winnable game until a little more than a minute left. But the Owls could not sustain any momentum – and Denver did.

Damn. I had thought they would win this one….

Grayowl,

What it sounds like is the DU coach set this up as part of his strategy. He knew to shut up but was hoping Walters would act like any other coach and speak his mind. This doesn't excuse all the bad calls though. The commentators on WJNA, who were at the game, were just dumbfounded. They couldn't believe some of the calls.

All I can say to this is Rex is learning. He is relativley young. He'll learn from this experience. All he has to do next is work on the defense.
