Ohh ok I had to look him up, you mean Steve Lappas…

Lappas began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at York (N.Y.) College for one season, followed by a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Fort Lee High School. He then took over the reins of Harry S. Truman High School (in The Bronx) program in 1979, where he coached five seasons and fashioned a 91-32 record, including a 27-3 record in 1983-1984 when his squad captured the New York State Class A title. He was a two-time (1981 and 1984) New York Daily News Coach of the Year selection. In 1984 Lappas joined Rollie Massimino's staff at Villanova University.

In 1988 Lappas became head coach at Manhattan College, where he turned around the program from a 7-21 season in 1988/89 to a 25-9 season and a berth to the 3rd round of the NIT in 1991/92. In 1992 he succeeded Rollie Massimino as head coach at Villanova, where he guided the team to seven postseason tournament appearances (four NCAA, three NIT), posting a 8-6 record. In 2001 he resigned as head coach after Villanova declined to sign him for a long term contract. He became head coach of the University of Massachusetts on March 26, 2001.

Lappas is known for his resemblance to Shemp Howard.

The Tampa Tribune and St. Pete Times have both reported his interest in the vacant USF position.

Neat article on Lappa, who is in his mid 50's? and might be the guy for FAU
Father's ethic fuels Lappas

Good job on looking that stuff up guys. You think he would be a good fit? I went to his camp at Villanova years ago and he was a pretty straight up guy.

just to give you a heads up; he was fired for some very unethical behavior……

Hey, im not trying to stir the pot here, but we need to point the blame where the blame should be pointed:

The players.

Sure, he recruited them, etc, but Jarvis didnt sneak out of the hotel room to the strip club at 1:00am, the players did…and Jarvis didnt pay the center, the booster did…now, did he know about this?  Dunno…

And he didnt put the bong to the lips of the players in thier dorms for them - they did that…

He was let because of control issues (pointed at him due to the above) and some questionable losses…he wasnt indicted in ANYTHING…

Hope everyone realizes that…

They lost a series of games his last year there against teams they should have easily beaten…that was the last straw…

Re: Mike Jarvis: Rolling the dice...

Hey just to disagree with you a little but Jarvis illegally recruited those kids. Barkley, Cook, Artest just to name a few. They entered the draft before he could be held accountable. He destroyed St. John's and whether you like it or not control is a major part of running a program. This didn't just happen within a year, this happened over a period of time and he does not deserve a second chance. Not at his age.

Re: Mike Jarvis: Rolling the dice...

Marcus Nelson talks about the coaching search on his blog. Makes me wonder if Jarvis would stick around here more than a year anyway.

Second week for search

"However, the New York Daily News’ Dick Weiss, one of the top basketball writers in the nation, reported that Jarvis met with Stanford Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby. FAU officials should be careful about a coach from a big-time program, who appears to have aspirations about getting back to a big-time program."

Re: Mike Jarvis: Rolling the dice...

Jarvis is able to win at the highest level…few of the other candidates can say the same thing.  If he chooses to come to FAU he is going to get the job, and he will probably stay to get his 100 wins.  If he doesn't want to come here, no big deal, but wherever he goes he will stay for > 5 yrs to get his name in the record book.  Hopping around for him at this point gets him nothing.
