New Parking Fee

"Those of you complaining about this will also be the first ones to be complaining when another school comes in and offers Walters a contract that we can't match."

Well NOT TRUE…because both you and i know that a lousy 5 dollars isnt going to make a difference if people dont come…

im sure they can cash my out of state tuition check, and season tix $$ to use toward the salary.

Look, no one complains for the $5 parking at Lockhart & this should be no different - football is a growing program as

Problem with that argument is that there are 5 Home Football games and 14 Home BBall games and I was offered to purchase a season parking pass with Football and I don't see one available for BBall.

I don't think it's crazy to ask for parking $ I just think it's too early.  We have the new arena to show off, that would have brought some lookers in.  Couple that with a good team and some exciting wins and in a few years double or triple the fan base then start charging.

Good (and necessary) Idea, bad timing.

I wrote this on Hutton's blog:

I have no problem paying the additional $5.

But since we need the money so bad, my suggestion is…Try to get more fans to attend the events and that will raise extra money.

It's just the principle. The same 1000 fans that support everything at FAU (and I am one of them) are the ones forking over the extra money.

The problem I really have with the fee is that they can't even give tickets away for the games (we average less than 1000 per game), but yet have a need to add another charge.  I think its bad timing, personally.  It will not impact me, but I think it is a stupid move.

Just park at the pool, the Education building or the UC and walk across the street. Problem solved.

Re: New Parking Fee

The Florida Panthers used to charge $10 (IIRC) for parking. Then people got smart and parked across the road at the Sawgrass Mills mall for free. The Panthers then took measures to stop "walk-ins" from people at the mall. This season (and maybe last season as well) they found a new solution - ticket prices were raised, but every ticket includes parking (thus, no additional parking fee at the entrance). This ended up being very bad for fans since now everyone had to pay for a parking spot (so, if you're more than one person in a car you're paying more for parking than you would have before).

I wouldn't be surprised if FAU tried something like this as well. However, in the big scheme, how much extra income will this net? There can't be more than a few hundred cars for most games. Even if we're VERY generous and say 1000 cars park at FAU for basketball games (which is much higher than the actual number), that's an additional $5000 per game… $70000 for the season - 14 home games (and it's probably far less than half of that). Given what it costs to place ads and get fans to games, this might cost more than it's worth.

And risk getting a ticket. Lm is correct, the risk far outweighs the revenue at this point.

thank you!

excellent point…

stop trying to squeeze "blood from a stone" from those who already come out by not only raising the ticket fee, but also adding a new one (parking), and get NEW FANS to the game…

btw, on this whole "we need more money to keep the coach here deal", we are probably talking about $1,000 per game (200 fans that will be impacted that is to say given their demographic), or $14k over the course of the season…LM seems to think it could be higher, but based on what i have observed over the last 15 years, and the current fan base , i respectfully diasagree it will be that much…the older guys, and some familys will be the prime impact deographic…the students, and the parents of the batan twirlers  halftime show, will be able to route around it…

in any event, if that sum is the difference bewteen Rex staying here, or moving on, thats pretty sad!!

I agree, it won't be much…but it will be something and every bit helps.  I'm not saying this is something I would do or even agree with them doing, but I understand WHY they are doing it.  We all complain about the tight athletics budget, and yet when they attempt to do something to help the situation, we complain.  I'm just saying we can't have it both ways.  And even if this only generates $14K over the season, how else do you suggest they raise an extra $14K during the season?

This whole big issue about the parking fee and the rasining of ticket prices is a minimal thing and there is no need to get all bent out of shape about it.  I realize anytime additional money has to be paid for anything there is an outcry, but we are talking a few extra dollars here.  FAU basketball is still very affordable, it's not as if they are pricing out their fans.  A family of 4 can still go to a game for about $50.  Plus, it has no effect on students or faculty, who I guess make up more than half of our crowds.

What I would suggest is that they offer discounts on the non-conference games against the likes of UNF and FGCU, which will be tough draws anyway.  They have done half price days for weekday games in the past, and I hope that is something that they will do this season as well.

Re: New Parking Fee

They better win some basketball games if they want to charge money for parking.  They need to worry about getting attendance over 1,000 per game before they worry about hitting the fans that do come for an extra $5.  I personally went to every game last season which means with the ticket increase and the parking I am looking to spend an extra $200 this season…thats not exactly chump change.  They need to win the Sun Belt a few times and show they can compete with the big boys before we start with parking charges.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.
