Orange Bowl Classic Basketball teams Off to Great Starts
The MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic will feature four teams that have gotten off to excellent starts in the 2009-2010 NCAA basketball season. The MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic will be played Saturday, December 19 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise featuring Miami vs. FAU at 4 pm followed by Florida vs. Richmond at 6:30 pm. The annual double-header is set to be seen state wide on FSFlorida / Sun Sports.
Florida, which is now 7-0 and ranked No. 13 in the country, is fresh off a victory over then-No. 2 ranked Michigan State in the 2009 Legends Classic in Atlantic City . The Gators also have wins over Florida State from the ACC and Rutgers from the Big East. The Gators are 7-0 for the first time since 2005. Their opponent, the Richmond Spiders, are 7-1 after claiming the title in the South Padre Island Classic with back-to-back wins over defending SEC Champion Mississippi State and defending Big 12 Champion Missouri. With the Spiders recent victory over Old Dominion, the 7-1 mark ties the school's second-best start in over 50 years.
Miami, which is 8-0, recently defeated Minnesota in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and also has victories over Tulane, UNC-Wilmington and South Carolina in capturing the Charleston Classic. The Hurricanes will take on Florida Atlantic, which is off to a 3-3 start in Mike Jarvis’ second year at the helm.
Additionally, the Orange Bowl Committee has teamed up with the MetroPCS for the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Big Buddy Program. The program gives area youth an opportunity to be a part of the double-header, which sends more than 1,000 kids annually the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic.
With assistance from Orange Bowl Committee sponsors MetroPCS, American Airlines, BankAtlantic Center , FSFlorida/Sun Sports, Greater Ft. Lauderdale CVB, Miami Herald and Miller Lite, the Classic is the only Division I basketball to be played in Broward county this year. Tickets for the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic can be purchased by visiting www.orangebowl.org or contacting 305.341.4702.
