Who's out there for the Owls thats worth thier salt?

I tend to agree with the Balado talk….he is committed to being in South Florida, he has great connections with the community, and has significant experience coaching.  Plus he would love to get a "raise" to what Rex was making and we can put a new buy out in his contract.  We can't really afford to be going out and looking for someone that we truly cannot afford.  The team knows him and he should be the one to step in and take our team higher.

I don't get it.  Why are so many of you guys content to just hand over the reigns to Balado without at least see what else is out there?  It is not as if this is a program that has been ultra-successful.  Those are the types of programs that just promote the next guy in line.  We are a sub .500 team.  There is lots of room for improvement.

As for what we can afford, hey, we just got an extra $100K to add to the pot.  Spread that out over a 3 or 4 year contract and our salary just became a lot more competitive.  Also, this job has a lot to offer.  Talent in place, the newly renovated arena, a growing athletic program…

We don't have to sell ourselves short and settle for a guy just because he is already here.  Maybe Balado turns out to be the guy, but there will be a lot of coaches interested in coming here.  We'd be doing ourselves a major disservice if we don't check out all options.

check the other options, but if we want someone that cares about our school and our players then Mike is the right move.

Get one thing right though…..were not content, were excited and want Mike to be the head coach……

Tim Welsh – Story
Welsh was fired as the Friars' coach after a 10-season stint in which he made two NCAA tournaments. He had a 160-143 record with the Friars.

I wouldn't mind this guy. He's not from a major program but he's been to 2 NCAA tourneys and knows what it takes to get there. He showed long term commitment to Providence

He's the one on that list that stood out.  Who knows what his situation is or if he'd be interested in this job, but his experience and past success jumped out at me.

This is the one guy I don't want to see at FAU.  I'm an FAU grad as well as a PC season ticket holder as I live here in RI.  I root for both teams.  Welsh, in my opinion, is not a very good coach.  He can't teach defense and is consistently out-coached in games.  He's lost many games in the 2nd half where other teams make adjustments but he can't…a bad in game coach.  In both NCAA tourney appearances for PC they didn't win a game and faded away as the season came to a close.  His teams have never peeked at the end of a season.  Also, 2 NCAAs in 10 years at PC is not good.  He was 0-2 in the NCAA Tourney here and 1-9 in the Big East Tourney in 10 seasons.  This guy can't win in the postseason.  I won't be happy if Tim is hired as the FAU head coach.

Re: Who's out there for the Owls thats worth thier salt?

The BOB KNIGHT talk came up when Rex was reputed to go to Mercer. Knight will only come out of retirement if he can get a job where he has a legit shot at making a national championship run. He couldn't do it at Texas Tech so he left. He wants the big-time. He shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as FAU.

Kelvin Sampson is an interesting option. He knows how to coach and he could be worth the baggage that he brings along. However, I couldn't see him staying more than a year or two and then getting another shot at a "Big Time" program. FAU would basically only serve as a probationary job for him until he proves himself and someone bigger jumps in and scoops him up.

What FAU needs is consistency. Neither Knight nor Sampson can bring that to FAU. I think FAU needs to bring in an established mid-major coach or an up and coming assistant who needs 4-5 years of head coaching experience before moving on. It is going to be difficult because too many young assistants want to make the rise as quickly as possible. It could be two good years at FAU and "see you later, thanks for the experience." I like bringing in a solid mid-major coach who doesn't aspire to getting a top-tier job, but who does aspire to conference titles and NCAA invites each and every year.

If we aren't even aspiring to conference titles, what are we aspiring to?  Winning seasons?

Here is the latest from Marcus.  I think FAU fans are starting to read his blog again.

Candidates are calling
By Marcus Nelson | Tuesday, April 15, 2008, 10:45 PM

It didn’t take long for FAU’s coaching search to get going and around 75 applicants have made inquiries about the vacancy created when Rex Walters bolted for San Francisco.

I talked to former St. John’s coach Mike Jarvis about the Owls’ opening and he has enthusiastically already made contact with FAU and will likely receive strong consideration.

Also, Miami associate head coach Jorge Fernandez said Tuesday he has interest in the job.

FAU assistant Mike Balado is also interested in pursuing the vacancy and appears will get serious consideration. When I talked to FAU AD Craig Angelos about who would fill the job, it was Angelos who brought up the possibility about internal candidates. If I remember another coaching search correctly, it seemed Angelos wasn’t quite as enthusiastic about promoting an assistant - even though he did just that a few days later.

Other possible candidates who may have interest are UAB assistant Donnie Marsh, a former head coach at FIU, and Texas Pan American coach Tom Schuberth.

In his blog, Marcus clearly states it's Donnie Marsh, currently an UAB assistant AND a former FIU coach until 4 years ago.  While a very nice guy and family man, it's obvious his lack of success doesn't translate well into name recognition… ;)…Actually, Shakey was a heck of a coach, in my estimation.
