The series:
The Trojans lead 19-9 in the all-time series. Last time on the hardwood, the Owls erased a 10 point first half deficit thanks to a 22-3 run. They would never trail from that point on, taking Troy 88-67 at Sartain Hall and hitting 55.4% of their attempts in the process.
Greg Gantt exploded for 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting and Ray Taylor (15) Pablo Bertone (13), and Shavar Richardson (11) were all in double figures as well. Florida Atlantic's bench outperformed the Trojans' 43-24 on the evening.
Troy at a Glance:
The Trojans will make the short trip to Boca Raton after knocking off Florida International 75-70 in OT on Thursday night in Miami. Their last two contests have gone into extra periods, although UALR had the better hand prior in a 74-62 win over Troy in their final contest at Sartain Hall.
On Thursday night Troy overcame a 12 point first half deficit to lead 35-31 at intermission. FIU would rally for a five point advantage with just 2:18 to play before the Trojans evened score by allowing just two Panthers attempts (0-2) down the stretch. Overtime favored the Trojans' momentum, with the Panthers posting a 1-of-7 mark thanks to continued strong defense.
“We controlled the overtime period,” coach Don Maestri said. “The more we felt we were in control on offense, the harder we played on defense."
Given the long rebounds it creates, Troy's three point game is producing 14.2 per grabs per contest off the offensive glass; which is second best in the league and 20th best in the NCAA.
Starting point guard Will Weathers is leading the Sun Belt in assists with 5.8 per outing, and sits 25th nationally.
The Trojans are 0-3 against the Owls in the squads' last three meetings, but hold a 9-4 overall mark at FAU Arena.
FAU at a Glance:
In the midst of a three game slide, and having lost five of their last seven, the Owls are looking to end the 2011-12 slate on a positive note.
Thursday's 79-76 OT loss to South Alabama but the kabosh on any hopes of skipping day one of the Sun Belt Tournament, but getting a final win at home against the Trojans would send two current Owls out the right way.
As integral parts of Jarvis' first recruiting class, guards Alex Tucker and Shavar Richardson will suit up for the last time at FAU Arena.
"We'll miss those guys, they helped us win some big games", said Coach Mike Jarvis. "They've been through the thick and thin of it all, and we'll miss them."
Tucker will depart having left his mark on the record books in assists with three seasons at 100+, being the all-time leader overall, and having the most dishes in a game with 16. But he could also be known for his feistiness and "bigger than thou" personality as well.
Never afraid, and never willing to back down, Fans have seen him block shots from opponents 6+ inches taller and 30+ pounds heavier; not to to mention some "heated" moments at times.
Richardson has lit a few fires this season as of late, and has also knocked down some big shots from downtown during his last four years. The Brooklyn native is currently 6th all-time in 3PT made and had career highs in points (31) and assists (6) against Troy back in December 2010.
With a 20 point showing on Thursday against the Jaguars, he's now knocking on the door of the 1,000 point club needing only five more to make his way through.
Assuming the Owls down Troy on Saturday and secure the 7th seed, FAU would face FIU in the Sun Belt Tournament considering that the Trojans would have to beat Florida Atlantic to have a chance at winning the tiebreaker against them.
Remember that 56-76 shellacking in Bury The Burrow back on February 4th? Sure that the team does, and would like nothing better than to take on the Panthers one more time.
In the meantime while we wait to fill everyone in, the complete tournament Bracket Is Here.
The Owls are 4-6 over the last 10 seasons in home finales at FAU Arena.
Latest Line:
FAU -9.5
Owl's Nest Prediction
Florida Atlantic should be able to make it four straight against Troy. But, while still leary of the squad receiving near double digit favor, we'll knock it down a couple digits to error on the safe side.
FAU -7
