Boca may be changing but not for FAU.

Uh, okay. Reality check: they went out of their way to make amendments to existing city codes to allow both the University Park project and the banners on Glades. University Boulevard is a mutually-beneficial development… but it was the city that proposed the idea, not FAU.

How many college students can afford $25 movie tickets to see a movie at iPic or a $200 dinner at lobster chop house or trulucks.

You make this asinine argument every year. You take the most expensive thing and act like it's the only option that students have (iPic, by the way, is $14 for "premium seating", not $25)

But yes, there are expensive things to do in Boca. Yes, some college students can afford it (see the rental prices for Addison Park, Mizner Park apartments and Tivoli… all have students in them).

Some can't. Those that can't, don't.  It's really that simple.

When I went out to eat in Boca, I didn't eat at Chops. Who the f*ck does that as a college student unless it's a special occasion? You go to Laspadas, you go to Senor Burrito, you go to Cannoli Kitchen, etc. I could eat at all those places for $10 or less.

Gainesville, Tallahassee, Orlando and Tampa all have expensive lobster dinners as well… if you want them.

Food and movies cost roughly the same in Boca Raton as they do in Gainesville (it actually costs $10.25/adult movie ticket in Boca and $10.50/adult ticket in Gainesville… but you're right, Boca is the ridiculously expensive one).

Sorry to say but Boca will never become a "College town."  There are way too many Boca residents in the higher power that will not allow that to happen.

Well, if that's the case then they're not doing a very good job of it. The City Council - you know, the "Boca residents in the higher power" you mentioned - already approved Addison Park, University Park, the football stadium and brought forth the proposal to re-purpose 20th Street (again, their idea). No citizens spoke during Public Forum in opposition of the latest projects. Their concerns about University Park were erased when Addison Park did a good job making sure their neighbors weren't affected. Everyone was worried about stadium traffic… and yet you did not read one single article about how traffic became a problem because it was handled. There is a precedent set now.

What they're worried about, as every citizen is worried about, is declining property values and crime. Nobody wants that anywhere. That's why 20th Street is perfect for this type of development since it's an industrial area. And as far as crime is concerned, the University Park developers showed statistics whereby the number of police calls actually went down when there are more students in an area.

The reality is that FAU will expand to 35, 40 maybe even 50 thousand students… and once the students are here, the businesses will respond to them, and things will change. The city cannot cap enrollment and they can't tell businesses what their target demographic should be. Like it or not, this is an inevitability, and the City Council has realized that.

But for the love of everything holy, nobody goes to Nippers any more.

What's up with that place??

*shrug* Who knows. Those places are a dime a dozen. Yamato Ale House is probably the best, followed by Duffy's.

I guess it doesn't matter much anyway since that whole area with the Nippers and bowling alley is going to get razed in the next year or so to make way for some upscale office, boutique, restaurant nonsense.

Re: "University Boulevard"

I think that whole bowling alley/Nippers area needs to just be knocked down already. Bowling alley is fun, but maybe eventually they can put one on campus or something. That area is just unsightly and doesn't belong. The shops across the street with the Total Wine and Rocco's Tacos is really nice and fits the boca image. I say knock down nippers and put like a buffalo Wild Wings or something to that effect in there

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Nippers needs to stay. It's the only place you can drink at until 5 in the morning and they deliver food late too. Just saying, it's fantastic.

I must say that bowling alley is very Boca.  You ever been to a nicer bowling alley?  I haven't.

I have always been suprised that Buffallo Wild Wings doesn't have locations down here.  Another thing, I think a Mellow Mushroom would do very well in between PF Changs and J. Alexanders across from FAU where 10 restaurants have failed since I was in college.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Another location with volatility is the southeast corner of Dixie and Glades…

Back in the early 80's it was Tom's Place for Ribs - THRIVED being right next to Pearl City..

Then he moved up to North Federal since the place couldn't handle the demand they were getting…

But everything that has come in since has flopped, floundered, or failed.

There was a place there for a while that did OK, Grinders, but they too ended up out business in the end…

Now it is another BBQ joint (PA Grill?)…just a matter of time til then go belly up as well…Tom was the only guy who made it out alive ;D

Re: "University Boulevard"

I remember Grinders, then it was DWades for a while. PA BBQ has been there for a while. It's a chain restaurant so it's actually lasted a lot longer than I think most people expected. Food isn't too bad, eaten there a few times.

Walty, you're right about the bowling alley. I guess being here for so long we take it for granted how nice the bowling alley is. I'd love a Mellow Mushroom over here. The only one is in Delray and that place is just way too packed. Even Chipotle knew they needed more than 1 location in Boca (new one on federal next to 5th ave. shops). Put a mellow mushroom right across from FAU and after football games that place will be slammed! PF Changs just doesn't do it for me

NextDoor - You my friend are brave. You eat the food from Nippers? Unless you're trying out for Fear Factor, there's no need to eat deep fried roaches  ;)  ;D
